Former featherweight amateur boxing champion and professional boxer Alan Santana has proven his fighting spirit extends beyond the ring. Recently, he organized a heartfelt fundraiser to support former WBC World Champion Israel Vasquez. He had recently been diagnosed with cancer and needed some financial assistance to help cover his medical expenses. Boxing historian Chris Smith reached out to Santana in October and asked if he would hold his annual bowling fundraiser to help raise money for Israel’s medical expenses. The event was held at Fountain Bowl, a popular bowling alley in Southern California; it was a unique gathering of comrades who were delighted to support a colleague who had once been a world champion and inspired all of them.
Alan Santana’s 2nd annual fundraiser drew an impressive crowd, including numerous former boxers who came together to support one of their own. Among the esteemed attendees were former WBC champion Arturo Frias, WBC champion Danny “Little Red” Lopez, and California State champion Greg Puente. Tina Puente delivered a stirring rendition of the national anthem, while Brenda Zaragoza of ESO Apparel supported the event. Renowned promoter Roy Englebrecht generously donated ringside tickets for his show at The Hangar. Notable figures in attendance included author Chris Smith and artist/boxing trainer Steve Harpst. Also among the attendees were the Weaver Triplet Twins, a well-known presence in the boxing world, whose appearance added to the evening’s excitement. The event was filled with laughter, shared memories, and a renewed sense of unity as these athletes, who once battled fiercely in the ring, demonstrated the strength of their bonds outside the boxing ring.
Special recognition goes to Lauren Hammond, who graciously contributed an array of valuable collectibles, including memorabilia from legendary athletes such as Kobe Bryant and Muhammad Ali. A heartfelt thank you to Boxing Promoter Roy Englebrecht, Bay City Paving, and Danny Little Red Lopez for their generous support in making this event a success. Ricardo Castineyra and his brothers graciously donated Israel Vasquez custom t-shirts for the event and raised a substantial amount of money for Israel’s wife and children. Israel lost his battle with cancer this past December.
Santana, known for his relentless drive and dedication during his boxing career, has continuously shown that his passion for the sport extends far beyond personal accolades. His commitment to helping former fighters in need reflects his character and deep respect for the boxing fraternity. By organizing this fundraiser, he provided much-needed financial relief and reinforced the message that no boxer should have to struggle alone.
Events like these highlight the importance of community and support in professional sports. Alan Santana’s efforts serve as an inspiring reminder that true champions never stop fighting—not just for themselves but for those around them. His work ensures that the spirit of boxing lives on, not only through competition but also through compassion and solidarity for one another and the sport of boxing.
