Terrell: Before we begin this interview, I’d like to share how our friendship on LinkedIn started. At first, I was a bit hesitant to connect with you because I had encountered fake profiles and scams. However, eventually I did respond to your message requests and we developed a strong bond that resembles a big brother-little sister relationship, for which I am truly grateful. What about my LinkedIn profile prompted you to reach out to me?

Priya: I am excited to begin this interview and discuss our connection. When I first came across your LinkedIn profile, I was impressed by your professional background and how you communicated your expertise. Your profile had a clear, authentic presence that suggested you are passionate and knowledgeable about your field. Although LinkedIn can sometimes be overwhelming due to the noise, your profile stood out because it was not just a list of accomplishments; it felt genuine. I sensed you had valuable insights and experiences to share, motivating me to connect. I’m glad our relationship has grown into something meaningful, and I look forward to having you as a constant in my life.

Terrell: Thank you so much. It’s incredible how someone can enter your life and influence you unexpectedly. I am truly blessed to call you my little sister. Can you share with my readers which part of India you call home? Are there any special tourist attractions, sacred monuments, or holy places you cherish in your area?

Priya: Currently, I am living in Tamil Nadu, which is known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. The region is home to several sacred monuments and tourist attractions, such as the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, a prime example of Dravidian architecture. Another iconic site is the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram is a major pilgrimage destination, while Kanyakumari, where the three seas meet, holds significant spiritual importance. Mahabalipuram’s Shore Temple is a popular historical site showcasing ancient art and architecture.

Terrell: What is the language spoken in the region you live in?

Priya: It’s Tamil.

Terrell: What was high school and college life like for you, and what school did you graduate from?

Priya: I completed my high school education at Saratha Higher Secondary School and attended Gobi Arts and Science College in my hometown. My experiences in high school and college were filled with strong friendships, great memories, and a passion for learning. I was often the person my peers turned to for help, whether it was with their studies or just for support. During high school, I worked hard to keep our group together, ensuring everyone had a good time while still focused on our goals. My college life continued this balance of academics and friendships, including the occasional skipped class and indulging in cheat meals. Loyal friends don’t come by chance; they stick around because of the person I am.

Terrell: What was it like growing up in that area, and what is your family life like?

Priya: Growing up in a middle-class neighborhood was a mix of comfort and challenges. My family wasn’t wealthy, but we always had enough. My parents worked hard to provide for us, and while we didn’t always get everything we wanted, we learned to appreciate what we had. Our home was filled with love, even if it was often noisy and chaotic, especially with siblings. Family dinners were important, and there was always a sense of togetherness, even when things got stressful. I’ve always been a dreamer. I spent a lot of time imagining my future, where I might live, what kind of job I’d have, and how I could make a difference in the world. Growing up in an environment where I was told, “Work hard and you’ll make it,” shaped my view of the future. I know there’s potential beyond where I came from, and while I’m grateful for my roots, I also dream big. I think about creating a life for myself that is different, more exciting, and more fulfilling. My family is supportive but practical too, so I find myself balancing their grounded advice with my ambitions and hopes for what’s to come.

Terrell: Is it challenging to be an individual while adhering to tradition?

Priya: Balancing individuality with tradition can be challenging. It requires honoring customs while staying true to personal values. It involves finding a way to respect tradition while expressing one’s unique identity. Considering my limited understanding of your culture and the expectations placed on women in your society, was it challenging for you to pursue a career as a web designer rather than following a more traditional path?

Terrell: Did you face any backlash from your family regarding this choice?

Priya: I understand that education has always been a priority in my family, and they believe in providing us with the tools to lead a reputable and successful life. They encourage us to pursue careers that align with our passions and skills, rather than strictly following traditional paths. My family has been supportive of my decision to become a web designer.

They understand that in today’s world, technology offers vast opportunities, and they trust that this path will lead to a bright and fulfilling future. We’re all focused on designing our lives and carving out our unique futures. But still, there are times when I face challenging situations, especially when deciding what I truly want to be. Balancing personal aspirations with societal expectations can sometimes be difficult, but I remain focused on my goals and believe these struggles will only make my journey more rewarding.

Terrell: Given that your family balances tradition with individuality, can we assume that by age 21, you have avoided the tradition of arranged marriage, if it still exists? If so, what are your feelings about it?

Priya: Yes, at 21, I’ve avoided the tradition of arranged marriage.  I want to challenge and change this tradition altogether. I should be free to live, pursue my passions, and choose what’s best for me. While I respect my family’s values, I want to create my path, one where marriage isn’t imposed but a personal decision made when I’m truly ready. I’m determined to live on my terms and hope to inspire others to do the same.  And yes, I would like to find the love of my life one day.

Terrell: I hope your words and actions inspire a generation of young women. I want to discuss choosing web design as a profession.  Were you introduced to it at a young age, and did you decide this is a field where you could excel? Were there other career options you considered? Additionally, what is the gender breakdown of web designers in India?

Priya: Web design as a profession can be discovered at any stage, often through exposure to technology or a creative interest. Many career options are available, such as graphic design, software development, and digital marketing. I am also doing my job as a software developer and web designer. So, choosing more than one domain is also common. I decided on my career as a developer in my college days, and after that, I learned the needed technologies and searched for jobs in software development. And now I’m a software developer and web designer. In India, the gender gap is narrowing, with more women entering tech through initiatives and educational opportunities, gaining confidence to succeed in the profession.

Terrell: Where would you like to be if you envisioned your future five or ten years from now? Would you still work in India, perhaps pursuing opportunities abroad, or owning and managing a successful business?

Priya: In the next five to ten years, I envision myself in a role where I can balance multiple opportunities. I aspire to continue growing professionally and may even explore career options abroad. Additionally, I hope to manage a successful business that aligns with my passions and expertise. By integrating these paths, I aim to keep learning and evolving, seizing new opportunities as they arise, and making a meaningful impact personally and professionally. Why settle for just one path when there is potential for all of them?

Terrell: What activities do you enjoy when not working or with loved ones?

Priya: I enjoy being calm and silent, without the need to engage in any specific activities, just existing. There are no distractions or requirements, allowing me to focus on being present in the moment. This practice helps me feel grounded, almost like I’m resetting my mind and body. There’s something truly peaceful about not having to fill every second with action; it enables me to embrace the present fully. It’s during these quiet moments that I feel at ease the most.

Terrell: Do you have any close friends, and do they positively impact your business or personal life?

Priya: I have a friend who guides me through every phase of my life. They offer valuable advice, support, and perspective, whether I’m facing personal challenges or professional obstacles. Having someone who truly understands me and provides guidance makes a significant difference, helping me navigate difficulties and staying focused on my goals. However, there are some things that I choose to keep personal, holding them close to my heart.

Terrell: In addition to becoming my little sister, you have become an integral part of my team as my web designer.

Priya: I am very grateful for your continued support in my career and for including me on your team. It is truly exciting and fulfilling to take on this new role as your web designer, while also being a part of your journey as your little sister. I feel honored to contribute to your team in this way, blending both the personal and professional aspects of our relationship. This presents an excellent opportunity for me to support your vision, learn from you, and collaborate in ways that will benefit us both. I am eager to bring my creativity and skills to the table, ensuring your projects shine and align with your goals.

Terrell: I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for designing my pitch deck, “A Korean Crime Story.” It features Robin Deiana as an ex-US Army Military Police officer who now works as a private investigator in Seoul. In the story, he goes on a vengeful rampage after his assistant is murdered during a case. I am currently seeking funding for my project. Do you have any other designs that you could share with us?

Priya: I am grateful to be part of such an inspiring project. However, since another firm employs me, I cannot share any external links or designs beyond my professional responsibilities. I wish you the best of luck in securing funding and making your vision a reality.

Terrell: Thank you once again. If anyone is interested in collaborating with you, how can they reach you?
