Keeping it Fresh

Whether we realize it or not, if we are not careful, we can get stale when it comes to selling. Instead of keeping ourselves fresh by updating our own skills and consistently looking for fresh strategies, we may shortcut best practices that work and get stuck in our old way of doing things. The reality is this leads to inconsistent activity, poor results, and limited victories.

Keeping it fresh can be very simple. Fresh ideas come from listening and watching for relevant information that can help us be even more effective.

I have been in direct sales for a long time, and I have to admit there are days when I feel like I’m just going through the motions. It’s important we do not get caught up in that trap because this will affect our production. Today I would like to share three areas that will help you stay fresh at all times in your sales career.

1) Invest in yourself.

You are unique. You are awesome. There is only one you. My philosophy is for each and every one of us to be the best possible person we can be. Do you know that feeling when you go out and buy yourself a new outfit or a new pair of shoes?  You look in the mirror and know you look good. The better you look, the better you feel. To do this you don’t have to spend a lot of money. Take care of you. Always look for ways to better yourself. The investment is well worth it.

I also believe it’s important to understand that this is your business; make sure it’s represented first class. I’m talking about simple things. Wash your car, make sure it’s clean on the inside.

We all have presentation books. When was the last time you updated yours and made yourself a brand new shiny book that you can present to the merchants? Have pride in what you are doing. Make the commitment to be excellent. Make sure your merchants are receiving this excellence from you.

2) Always remember “Why?”

Whenever we start to feel like we are getting stale, it’s time to go back to the beginning and remember why we started. As a matter of fact, I would like you to write down five reasons why it’s important for you to have great success in the field of selling. Make sure you have emotion attached to this.

By having it written down to look at constantly, if you ever feel like giving up, you will be reminded why you are doing what you are doing. This will give you the motivation to be consistent and persistent.

3) Attitude of gratitude

I truly believe it is absolutely imperative for us to get around like-minded individuals and spend good quality time with them. It helps to encourage each other. Success breeds success.

Last weekend I had the true blessing of going to Atlanta and spending time with three of our top representatives–Shawn, Jason, and Mitch, and their better halves. It was an amazing time of great fellowship and encouragement.

On Friday evening, Shawn and Chelle Benson had us all for dinner at their beautiful home. Each of us went around the table and shared our hearts. In many cases it got very emotional. One thing we all shared was a tremendous amount of gratitude. We all left feeling very encouraged and uplifted.

How about you? What are you truly grateful for? Write them all out on a piece of paper and constantly look at it.

Let someone know that you are thankful for them. Never ever take anything for granted. Understand that every day is a gift. Imagine if we started each day with an attitude of gratitude, not complaining about anything, the kind of day you would have.

Let’s all make the commitment to always stay fresh and invest in ourselves and our business. Let’s remember why we do what we do no matter what we are going through in life. Let’s always have an attitude of gratitude.
