Review – Ed Sheeran Album: “X”

ed sheeran

Finally! Ed Sheeran’s new album “X” (pronounced as “multiply”) is out! The album consists of 12 tracks that are altogether upbeat, slow, in love, betrayal, vengeful, sad, grief, drunk, cheated on, – planes? – and more in love. Thus, makes it very obvious that Sheeran is trying to explore a wider musical horizon – good for him.

At first, I was quite disappointed when Sheeran dropped his lead single “Sing” back in April. I wasn’t that impressed, mainly because it really sounded like a Justin Timberlake song – I don’t know you guys, but his voice on this song, at some point, really sounded like JT, and its arrangement can be mistakenly identified as an extended version of JT’s “Like I Love You”, especially its guitar strumming – and then the realization came in, it was co-written and produced by Pharrell Williams who also produced and co-wrote “Like I Love You” back in 2002. Don’t get me wrong, I love these people –goodness they are both geniuses, and no one can argue with that – It’s just that, at first I found the song as a recycled material. Though along the way, it grew very entertaining

enough, because let’s admit, they have explored another music genre for Sheeran, and thanks to Pharrell for his funky, feel good, upbeat touch on music, because it eventually became very likeable in my ears.

In all honesty, it’s really hard to pick favorite from this album, all tracks were actually really good, worth listening, and musicality and lyrics  wise, you know they were all written and made with full passion to make them as awesome as its result now. From a very in love track “Tenerife Sea” to a drunk and high – asking not to be alone track “Bloodstream”, the promise of love on “Photograph” to – you can leave now if you can’t understand why I love my job in music industry“Nina”, and this sassy track “Runaway” to another very drunk song “I’m a mess”.

But of course, just like any other, you cannot help but to have track/s that you’ll find yourself listening on repeat, or in the most played in your playlist. For me,  these are the songs that topped this album:

1. ONE – Its lyrics and arrangement just reminds me of why I fell in love with Ed Sheeran’s music in the first place. So much in love, sweet, and ballad, musicality of this track draws , yet again, another proof that Ed Sheeran is one of the best singer/songwriter right now.

All my senses come to life
While I’m stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I’ll never leave again
‘Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
Just promise me, you’ll always be a friend
‘Cause you are the only one

2. DON’T – Now this too harsh break up song – or should I say, a story telling about his cheating ex – really gets my attention. The very raw feelings, and emotions were written explicitly all over the song. It was very brave for Ed Sheeran to write such vulgar song, but I bet he felt really good just after writing about this real life story of cheating ex.

Don’t fuck with my love
That heart is so cold
All over my arm
I don’t wanna know that babe
Ah lahmlahlah
Don’t fuck with my love
I told her she knows
Take aim and reload
I don’t wanna know that babe
Ah lahmlahlah

And I never saw him as a threat
Until you disappeared with him to have sex of course
It’s not like we were both on tour
We were staying on the same fucking hotel floor

3. THE MAN – This one blew me away. We all hear Ed Sheeran rap in some of his songs, just a tiny bit of rapping here and there. But this time, the song, “The Man” is a full blast rap song – aside from its hook – plus not to mention, this is another song about hate and love.

I don’t love you baby
I don’t need you baby
I don’t want you no
I don’t love you baby
I don’t need you baby
I don’t wanna love you no

4. THINKING OUT LOUD – OH. This song just melts my heart. The lyrics just proclaimed an everlasting love for a lover – “And darling I will be loving you till we’re 70. And baby my heart could still fall as hard at 23” – this part of the song just said it all already, man, Sheeran must be really in love when he wrote this. And bow down to its arrangement, the piano, slow drum beats, and the guitar solo that goes perfectly with its lyrics and his vocal. The most sappiest and romantic track on this album.

So honey now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I’m thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are

5. AFIRE LOVE – And finally, the last track on the album, “Afire Love”. I believe he wrote this song few weeks before his grandfather’s funeral – and finished it at his funeral – who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. This song is heart-breakingly beautiful. Such a powerful way of ending an album.

Things were all good yesterday
And then the devil took your memory
And if you fell to your death today
I hope that heaven is your resting place
