At the heart of Los Angeles, a city built on dreams and storytelling, stands a school that has nurtured generations of actors, not just in technique, but in truth. Under the passionate leadership of Managing Director Johnny Yoder, the Stella Adler Studio in Los Angeles (named the Art of Acting Studio, after Stella Adler’s most famous book) continues to uphold a powerful mission: to train actors who value humanity as profoundly as they value their craft.
Recently, Yoder hosted an intimate and elegant fundraising event at the Studio, a curated wine tasting that became far more than a social gathering. Guests were welcomed into a warm, artistic space and treated to a beautifully arranged selection of hors d’oeuvres, perfectly paired to complement a striking array of Northern California wines. Among the attendees was Adam Gerber, Director of Development, who had traveled from New York City to support the event.
As guests sipped and savored, Johnny guided them through each vintage, sharing not only the region and story behind each wine but also the story behind the Studio itself. It was an evening that engaged both the palate and the heart. The guests were mesmerized, not just by the wines but by Johnny’s passion and insight. As they tasted, they learned about the challenges of sustaining such a vital program in today’s climate and the complexities of supporting a student body drawn from all corners of the globe. The Art of Acting Studio is not simply a school; it is a home, a haven, and a launching pad for international artists who come to Los Angeles to train with rigor and purpose.
The Studio has now launched “Our Next Act: The Future of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting”, a $500,000 crowdfunding campaign that will culminate with the 75th Anniversary Gala on September 17th. This campaign isn’t just about raising funds, it’s about honoring a legacy and securing a future for the next generation of artists.
Nationwide, the nonprofit sector is in crisis. Since 2022, operating costs have risen more than 60%. Individual giving is down over 30%, and vital government grants and funding sources have been reduced, exhausted, or eliminated altogether. Even some of the nation’s most respected institutions are cutting programs or closing their doors.
And yet, the Stella Adler Studio of Acting remains strong because of its community. Enrollment is thriving. Programs are vibrant. The mission is clear and urgent. But the school operates without the cushion of a significant endowment, in one of the most expensive cities in the world, at a time when philanthropic support is growing more challenging to secure.
“This isn’t just about keeping the lights on,” Yoder says. “It’s about making sure that the next generation of actors has a place where they can train, grow, and be part of something bigger than themselves. Art doesn’t exist in a vacuum; it reflects and serves the community.”
In a city fueled by entertainment, institutions like the Stella Adler Studio are essential to preserving culture and cultivating new voices. The school doesn’t just produce talent-shaped artists with empathy, depth, and a sense of purpose. Supporting the Studio means investing in storytelling, inclusion, and the soul of the arts.
The 75th Anniversary Gala on September 17th will be a night of celebration, reflection, and renewed commitment. But before the curtain rises, the invitation has been extended:
