FERGUSONS IN DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS IS OPEN

…WITH A NEW COFFEE SHOP, FLOWERS, BEAUTY, AND RELAXATION BUSINESSES

Yes, I wrote about the new Mexican restaurant La Monja about a month ago.

Well, now the refurbished hotel on Fremont Street called Fergusons has opened with a new coffee shop called Mothership Coffee Roasters where they have quiche, scones, and amazing coffee. Along with them, there are now numerous businesses located within this area including Mike’s Recovery, a bathing and soaking spot to stay totally hydrated; a beauty shop just for hair; All for Our Country, OFI, formerly in Henderson, which makes handcrafted wood items; Futuremakers, daily classes for art, tinkering and yoga; Neon Cactus Vintage featuring vintage clothes and items; The Tiny Bloom, beautiful custom flowers; and of course another great restaurant, Hatsumi.

The area has been excavated down so there are plenty of levels. There are spots to just lay back and relax, bring your coffee outside and gaze at the strange sight of two semi-trailer trucks suspended in animation. Their grand opening is Dec. 13-15 so if you are in Las Vegas, come on down. A relaxing place to be!

Amber Balcean Underdog Bloodline in NASCAR

Gamble everything for love, if you’re a true human being.  If not, leave this gathering. Half-heartedness doesn’t reach into majesty. You set out to find God, but then you keep stopping for long periods at mean-spirited roadhouses. ~ Rumi

I think even Rumi would agree we could substitute the word “love” here for “passion”.  Yes, Amber Balcean is known as an underdog.  She comes from a bloodline all too familiar to me which is the good old blue-collar breed.  Amber is packed with passion for what she does in ways that command respect.  She comes from the school of “hard-knocks” and this young lady will spare no effort nor take any prisoner to reach her objectives.

As I spoke with her, she was busy in her home town of North Carolina running from meeting to meeting.  She is on a mission seeking sponsorship for the next ARCA Series under the NASCAR banner. She already secured a couple of good endorsements “1stphorm” which is a food supplement company and “Tavia” which provides a feminine product subscription service that helps keep girls in developing countries in school. She is looking for sponsors with a positive message in their brand that aligns with her personal values.

Amber Balcaen is a 3rd generation race car driver from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In 2016, Amber made Canadian history when she became the 1st Canadian female to win a NASCAR Sanctioned race in the USA. At 27 years of age, Amber has successfully leveraged her racing platform to be one of motorsport’s largest female influencers – Inspiring and motivating people around the world to pursue their dreams, break stereotypes and have a positive impact on society. In addition to driving race cars, Amber is an active motivational speaker, delivering keynotes across North America. She is also the President of her own company, Amber Balcaen Racing Inc. (ABR).  Amber is known as the “underdog of NASCAR”, as she grew up racing on the dirt tracks of Manitoba, overcoming much adversity to make her way into the NASCAR ranks.

This 27-year-old speed maniac loves everything related to adrenaline.  You name it, she wants it.  Her parents are at the top of her list as role models including NASCAR driver Matt DiBenedetto whose story as an underdog resonates with Amber. Spare time is spent with her high-school sweetheart, boyfriend and football player for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Canada.  How do they make the relationship work long distance after several years?  “True love will make you do anything to make things work” she declares boldly with confidence. She and her boyfriend will set up FaceTime, so they see each other while watching the exact same movie at the exact same time. It’s just like real-time without boundaries as they will read books to each other through FaceTime to facilitate discussion.  If you haven’t thought of it already, I am sure you know a lot of couples who would do well to introduce reading to each other into their relationship. I did it. I still do it and I tell you it is magic.

Amber’s history has seen her ride dirt bikes and some road bikes which she truly enjoys but she spends most of her time speeding in four-wheeled missiles because it’s her passion.  Intrigued? Look her up on Facebook and Google.  She’s a force to be reckoned with and with her speed and desire to make it, she’s well on her way.  Nothing is going to stop her. Watch out NASCAR, watch out world.  Here she comes.  Are you ready for her?

4 Tips to Achieve Faster Success

We live in a day and age now where we want things fast. It can be anywhere from the speed of the Internet or weight loss to success in one’s business. It’s all about instant gratification. People tend to want to make money and become super successful as soon as possible. This is why a lot of people fall for get-rich-quick schemes. Advertisements all over social media are full of opportunities about how people can achieve success and become rich right away.

It can take many years to become an overnight success, the reality is there’s no such thing. I’ve found that the harder I work, the luckier I get. However, there are certain steps you could take that can help you accelerate your journey toward such. Here are some steps that will help you to become more successful faster.

1) Set Specific Goals

In order to become successful more quickly, you need to have a clear path. As I stated, there are no shortcuts. The first thing you need to do is define what success means to you. Write down exactly what you would like to accomplish this week, this month, and the upcoming year.

It’s important that you have long-term goals. Break out a notebook and write down 25 things you would like to accomplish in the next 5 years. After you’ve written this out, you can create smaller goals which will help you achieve the big ones. Having goals gives you motivation to work hard which helps you become successful.

2) Get a Positive Routine

Repetition is the key to success. Routines keep you progressing and they also help you keep growing. If you follow a routine, it is much easier to monitor your progress over time.

Don’t be the type of person that flies by the seat of their pants. Know exactly what you are doing and have a plan for each day. A regimen helps you establish good habits that can help you become successful much faster.

3) Find a Success Coach

Michael Jordan is considered one of the best basketball players of all time. Keep this in mind, he had a coach. Anybody that has success will tell you that they have had a mentor. You want to find someone who’s on the same path that you want to be on, but further along. They can offer their experience and give you guidance on your success journey.

Having a success coach can benefit you in so many ways. There is no doubt about it, they can help you find success faster than if you had no guidance at all.

4) Use Failures as Learning Opportunities

Failure is part of the success journey. The more we step out of our comfort zone, the more mistakes we will make.

If you want to become successful, you cannot let these mistakes or setbacks break you down. We all have difficulties and challenges in life and in order for us to succeed, we must fail. Failures can be our biggest teachers.

Keep progressing. If you learn from your mistakes, you’ll become stronger and more confident.

Remember that success is a journey and the road to success is always under construction. There are no clear paths. Know exactly what you want, make a 100% commitment, and go for it!

Have a super successful week!

Create the Perfect Home Workspace

Your alarm blares. It’s so early! Stomach growling, you shower and run out the door to beat the hordes of commuters.

Not the most relaxing start to your day, is it?

As technology makes it easier to work whenever and wherever, people are ditching the commute and working from home. But if you’re in tight quarters, how do you draw the line between office and living space? Here are a few tips that can help:

Designate a Clear Workspace

Consistency is essential when it comes to working from home. Pick a comfortable area — put a desk in the corner of your living room, for instance — and stick to it, day in and day out. It’s a great way to build a routine and stay productive.

Clear the Clutter

Keep your work in your workspace. Don’t let loose papers and other work materials spill into your living space. Think of your workspace as your office and keep it distinct from the areas where you cook dinner, hang out with friends, and binge-watch TV.

Minimize the Static

The garbage truck just went by and now sirens are blaring. While you no longer have to put up with talkative coworkers, distractions are still rampant when working at home. To keep out noise, consider closing your windows and doors and wearing headphones.

Set Business Hours

To maintain a work-life balance while working from home, set hours when you’re officially “on the clock.” For some, sticking to the standard 9-to-5 workday is helpful. No matter the hours you choose, having a schedule will keep things clear.

Working remotely is a great option but maintaining a balance can be tough. Boundaries are a great way to achieve both personal and professional success in a single space.

Working from home? Reach out if you want to look for properties with more space for your home office.

“Koba the Dread” by Martin Amis

The complete title of Martin Amis’s blistering history of Stalin is, “Koba the Dread: Laughter and the Twenty Million”. The ‘twenty million’ are the Russians whom Stalin murdered; but what part could ‘laughter’ play in that? Amis explains:

‘[I]t has always been possible to joke about the Soviet Union, just as it has never been possible to joke about Nazi Germany. This is not merely a question of decorum. In the German case, laughter automatically absents itself … In the Soviet case, on the other hand, laughter intransigently refuses to absent itself.’

Consider these examples, gathered from Amis’s book and from other sources:

There is something funny about the prolonged standing ovations that were called for in honor of Stalin—prolonged because no one wanted to be the first to stop applauding. There is something funny about Solzhenitsyn’s futile debate with a Marxist scholar while on board a prisoner transport. ‘In arguing with them,’ Solzhenitsyn observed, ‘you wear yourself out, unless you accept in advance that the argument is simply a game, a jolly pastime.’ And it was funny to enter a voting booth during Soviet elections and find only one name on the ballot, marked beforehand. The presence of Soviet judges at the Nuremberg Trials was rather comical … or maybe just hypocritical: Russian Communists passing judgment on German Nazis for (1) using civilians for slave labor and (2) persecuting and murdering people because of political or religious beliefs. Finally, it is very funny that Christopher Hitchens judged V.I. Lenin to be “a great man”—yet Mother Teresa was a villain.

But horror more than anything else permeates Amis’s history of the Soviet Union. He gives readers a nightmarish overview of a little-known and enforced famine that ended the lives of some five million people. Torture extracted bogus confessions from legions of political prisoners. And in the Siberian slave camps to which the “guilty” were sent, inhumanly hard labor trudged hand-in-frozen-hand with minimal nourishment.

Almost as horrifying, these Communist abominations were ignored, denied or rationalized by scores of Western intellectuals. Thankfully, Martin Amis convinced one, Christopher Hitchens, to re-think some of his positions vis-à-vis the Soviet Communists. Though Hitchens protested against the claim that Stalin’s Russia was as bad as Hitler’s Germany, Amis noted that this alone indicated progress:

‘The argument, now, is about whether Bolshevik Russia was “better” than Nazi Germany. In the days when the New Left dawned, the argument was about whether Bolshevik Russia was better than America.’

Martin Amis’s “Koba the Dread” can’t match the epic stature of Solzhenitsyn’s “Gulag Archipelago”; nor does it presume to try. But it is, in its own right, a great book. And as a brief introduction to Communism’s toxicity, it cannot be topped.

Is Your Child Struggling in School?

With all the busy schedules of children today, it is harder than ever to motivate them in the school setting. But it’s important for parents to help keep kids on track.

1. Know when you can’t help, and why. First of all, parents are emotionally involved in their children’s lives and this creates an enormous amount of frustration. Additionally, most parents do not have the knowledge base to effectively teach children the material they need to learn.

2. Parents, you are the enemy! Why is it that teachers, who might not know our children well, say things that are taken as gospel but when we say the same things to our children, we don’t know what we are talking about? As much as you want to help your child, most youngsters resist assistance from their parents…..period. Take solace in the fact that when they are older and need money, you will seem very smart to them.

3. Know when you can help, and how. No matter their grade level, children rarely ask for help. You must notice the warning signs as soon as possible so intervention can take place in a fast and efficient manner.

4. What are the warning signs? During study time, a child’s head might be down, he or she might be crying, falling asleep or, in some cases, pulling his hair out. Low grades on quizzes, tests or projects are indications that help is needed. Teacher phone calls or emails, as well as negative progress reports, can also be signs that students are struggling.

5. Don’t wait! Progress reports are usually mailed home five weeks (half-way) into a marking period. At this point, too much time has passed for a struggling student to make up missed work. Contact the teacher and make sure you let her know to contact you if you can help in any way. Your child’s success is everyone’s responsibility.

6. What can you do to help? Firstly, set up a schedule of extra help sessions for your child. Many schools have peer tutoring and other resources as well. Sometimes parents feel it’s necessary to contact a professional tutor. Be wary of agencies that make you sign contracts for an excessive number of lessons. Also, ask for referrals and make sure that the person working with your child has acceptable credentials; however, some tutors who do not have Master’s degrees can also be excellent instructors.

7. Testing. If you feel your child needs special testing accommodations or might have a learning disability, your school district can often do the testing for you. Sometimes it’s necessary to go to an outside agency, but these tests are quite costly so be sure to get a referral from someone you trust.

It is never easy to help a struggling, frustrated youngster; but with a positive action plan, it is certainly easier to motivate your child to succeed in school.
