Eagles Slaying Demons

“Eagles Slaying Demons”

Death to Suicide

10-25-2020

By Florida Night Train

Thirty years, 262,800 hours… and within seconds, the trigger was pulled. The person I knew as dad, took his life with a gun. When Fran Haasch, and her husband Rhett reached out announcing an event called “22-A-Day” to be held at Bert’s Barracuda HD in Clearwater November 14, 2020, in honor of servicemen and women who lost their lives to PTSD-induced suicide, I knew the day had come for me to go back to a place where the silent killer, the insidious demon in one’s mind needed voice to reason. To say the prospect of writing this column created a sense of intimate fear in me is something hard to understand. I underestimated the task from every emotion possible acting out in ways that led me to almost give up, but I persevered because it was the right thing to do.

It was only this year on a bitterly cold day in January that I was drawn to a place to make my peace with this good man I once called dad. At his tombstone accompanied by a most kind and understanding soul, I crouched down and whispered to him “It’s ok, Dad. I love you. If you can, try to look after me and the children in some way. I’m doing good. Don’t worry.”

The human heart and soul’s emotions are extremely powerful. They can come to control the strongest will-minded men or women out there. I read a book called “Care of The Soul” once by Dr. Thomas Moore. In this book Dr. Moore makes the case that emotions, in a sense, are the barometer of the soul. A direct line of communication to our own soul where our soul either speaks to us gently, or screams for some form of nourishment or healing. When we live a balanced, healthy life then the soul within makes way for happy sentiments. When we, however, deprive our soul of the attention it needs it will send signals of unhappiness to the degree of neglect we are causing it. Hence, addictions, pain, psychiatric disorders and worse, suicide can result when we bottle up our emotions without an outlet of peace and positivity. We must pay attention to nourishing the soul as much as we nourish our body.

Patrick Bradley’s life was used to fight the Vietnam war without much preparation or attention to what his soul needed. He had no choice. He followed orders to accomplish tasks and missions that can rob the soul of the best of humans. As a result, Patrick Bradley came back empty. He came back to civilization with extreme severe PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) now referred to as PTSS (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome). Not a week goes by where Patrick, by his own admission, is not haunted by thoughts of suicide. Rare are the days he does not have visions reminding him of the horrors of war. Stats show ~22 veterans per day commit suicide. That is not to mention CDC’s numbers showing 45,000 cases in 2016 with suicide rates going up more than 30% in half of states since 1999. More than half of people (54%) who died by suicide did not have a known mental health condition.

In her book “The Eagle On My Arm”, published author, co-author and long term personal friend of former President Bush’s family, Ms. Dava Guerin who also lost her late husband and co-author to suicide, writes about the life of Patrick Bradley and his triumph over his demons. Patrick Bradley enlisted in the US army in 1967. He was later deployed to North Vietnam as a special operator with missions to kill high value targets. Combat left him physically and psychologically wounded. Mr. Bradley struggled to adjust when he returned home. He seemed destined for military prison after an altercation where he broke a superior officer’s jaw. His life changed forever when a psychiatrist recommended a unique path for healing; a program sponsored by the Canadian government. Patrick traveled to Canada to study bald eagles and documented their behavior. Alone, with only a backpack full of supplies, he entered the woods with instructions to count the northern bald eagles and determine if their population was decreasing. Patrick’s military training prepared him for survival in the harsh Canadian wilderness, and he found himself recovering while living alone with minimal human contact. His work paved the way for groundbreaking research, including the discovery of a link between the use of pesticide and a decrease in southern bald eagle populations. Bradley forged a successful career, training wild animals for movies and television and managing birds of prey sanctuaries at theme parks and nature preserves. He also committed himself to helping other wounded warriors by co-founding the Avian Veteran Alliance, a nonprofit that pairs veterans suffering from PTSD/PTSS and physical injuries with injured birds of prey. To date more than ~4000 soldiers have taken part in the program, with dramatic results. This book is a moving account that reveals how a soldier became a dedicated healer using his years of study and solitude to face his demons and turned his pain into a lifelong passion for helping others.

It became evident in my live interview with both Ms. Guerin and Patrick which you can watch on my YouTube channel; “Florida Night Train” on November 6, 2020, that Patrick is one of the few who was led to reconnect to some degree with the beauty of life and his soul. Patrick’s life has not been wasted—on the contrary! Because of his ingrained courageous resilience, this generation as well as future generations will have the means to heal to some degree and cope with PTSD/PTSS through words and actions. I did not ask him, but I would dare to say this man would not hesitate going through hell again so he could help his fellow patriots and civilians as well. We owe him our deepest gratitude for our quality of life, our freedom, and now for making a huge difference with wildlife preservation as well as providing hope for the souls out there who are experiencing anguish deep in the core of their hearts.

Patrick is the living example of the absolute critical importance for men and women to connect with the outside world, wildlife, or to develop a passion and healthy outlets that will help them cope and possibly heal. To him it was wildlife and to others it may be other outlets. I experienced this firsthand myself in 2017, going through such anguish and pain I literally would lose consciousness on my knees praying to God to take the pain away. That is when I called for counseling and it went a little something like this…“Hello? I am going through intense pain and I don’t know what to do with this. I feel like I’m going to lose my mind. Can I come in and see someone please?” Following that I discovered my own outlets; fine art on sheet metal and writing editorial features such as this one, and wind therapy on my motorcycle. Had I not focused on pouring my emotions into my outlets and my children, I might have become a statistic.

Join Patrick, Dava, and I at Bert’s Barracuda Harley Davidson on November 14, 2020, for the “22-A-Day” event to fight suicide and raise awareness. If you experience thoughts of suicide or if you know someone who does, you are not alone. Reach out! It takes courage to say “Hey? Help me out. I just don’t know what to do with these emotions.”

For free help you can confidentially call the “National Suicide Prevention Lifeline”; 1-800-273-8255.

Thanks Dad for showing me how to ride, do art, and for the love of literature. RIP

Co-Author Dava Guerin who wrote “Eagle on my Arm” with her late husband Terry Biven who was an accomplished award-winning journalist: Ms. Guerin is author or co-author of six books, including “Rebuilding Sargent Peck”, “Vets and Pets”, “Unbreakable Bonds” and now “The Eagle on my Arm”, a biography of Vietnam war veteran Mr. Patrick Bradley and the healing he found in the wilderness and birds of prey. Ms. Guerin is a Communications Consultant and a freelance writer.  She previously served as Communications Director for the US Association of former members of Congress in Washington DC. She is an active supporter of Barbara Bush’s Foundation for Family Literacy and, The Gary Sinise Foundation.

The Story of Pitmaster LT’s

Pitmaster LT’s barbecue sauces and dry rubs are the creations of Luther “LT” Tooks – a Vietnam War era drafted veteran of the U.S. Army, longtime Kansas City Area resident, and former barbecue restaurateur and pitmaster.

The creator of the brand, Luther “LT” Tooks, was born into poverty in the Altgeld Gardens public housing projects on Chicago’s South Side.  After years of growing up in tough, low-income Chicago neighborhoods – the last of which was the notorious Cabrini Green housing projects – Luther left Chicago after his high school freshman year to live with his paternal grandparents in Little Rock, Arkansas.  It was there that he finished high school and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Philander Smith College, becoming the first college graduate in his family.  Upon graduation, he was hired by IBM.  However, just four months later, he was drafted into the U.S. Army at the height of the Vietnam War.  Somewhat miraculously, though, instead of being deployed to the war like most, he was assigned to serve in the Netherlands as part of the Allied Forces of Central Europe.

After his honorable discharge from military service, Luther returned to IBM, choosing to relocate to its Memphis office.  Being the noted BBQ town that Memphis is, Luther began trying the offerings of all manner of local Memphis barbecue joints, but he never found anything to his complete satisfaction.  Consequently, he began experimenting with making his own barbecue sauce and seasonings.  But it was not until IBM promoted him to a first level management position in its Kansas City office, and he experienced the style of barbecue endemic to that celebrated BBQ town, that he eventually perfected his secret recipes for barbecue sauces and dry rub seasonings.

Luther developed his sauces to be all natural (i.e., no high-fructose corn syrup or preservatives) and possess distinctively Kansas City-style taste and texture. But also to embody a confluence of flavors which, individually, are often the dominant flavors in different regional styles of barbecue sauce, rendering his sauces appealing to a broad variety of barbecue palates.  And his dry rubs are crafted of premium ingredients, as opposed to containing typical rub filler ingredients like an abundance of salt or sugar.

Upon retiring from IBM, Luther used his sauce and rub creations, as well as his know-how in wood smoking techniques, to open and operate a barbecue restaurant (“LT’s Finest BBQ”) in suburban Lenexa, Kansas, in the 1990s.  To this day, many that patronized his restaurant say that his was the best barbecue served in Kansas City.  Nevertheless, poor location visibility eventually led Luther to close the restaurant and return to the corporate world.

Then, after a second retirement as an office solutions sales rep and manager for a local owned company, in 2016, Luther launched the Pitmaster LT’s brand of BBQ sauces and dry rubs to share his barbecue creations in the retail space.  Initially, Pitmaster LT’s products were accepted by local and regional supermarket chains, like Hy-Vee and Price Chopper, but by 2019, they were being welcomed into regional themes of national supermarket chains like Kroger, Albertsons, and Whole Foods Market.  Now, in 2020, Pitmaster LT’s is gaining traction in Canada, including with highly respected supermarket themes like Longo’s and Whole Foods Market, and Luther’s brand is even beginning to expand into overseas markets in Europe and the Middle East.

Self-Discipline Is the Key to Success

I believe the single most important key to becoming successful is self-discipline. It will help you stay focused on achieving your goals as the road to success will have plenty of obstacles and a lot of difficulties. A person with self-discipline understands that. Successful people march through the hurdles as they push themselves to new levels.

Self-discipline is the foundation of success; no goals, achievement, or true success can be realized without it. I have found it’s this determination that allows a person to focus on their goals until they are accomplished.

Self-discipline is a habit and a skill and requires a lot of effort to acquire it. There is pain when we talk about it, there’s a price to pay. But without it, a person will end up paying an even greater price. Unfortunately, that is called the pain of regret.

So the question is “Why is self-discipline important for success in life?”

Self-discipline helps you become committed to reaching great levels in your life. If you really want to become successful, the first thing you must do is discipline yourself.

Habit

As I have stated, self-discipline is a habit. Most people never remain disciplined in their lives because they are simply lazy. Laziness is also a habit. Make the decision to choose the habit of self-discipline.

Commitment and Consistency

When a person has self-discipline, they are committed to getting things done. This also teaches you to become more consistent, and when you’re consistent, you will achieve anything you want in life.

Focus

You will also find that self-discipline helps you focus on your goals and when you’re focused, you will complete all the things that need to be done. Successful people are always looking forward, towards their goals and in turn, they become laser focused.

Self-Esteem

Another benefit that goes with being disciplined is you will actually build up your self-esteem and your confidence will grow. By disciplining yourself and working hard, you will achieve your goals. As your achievement progresses, you will begin to feel much better about yourself.

Keep in mind that we are all under construction. We never arrive, and it’s important that we learn and grow each and every day. When we have self-discipline, we improve ourselves daily—for when you do something consistently, you just become better.

Yes, self-discipline is the most important part of success. You are truly blessed with incredible potential to achieve great things in life, what are you going to do with it? Unfortunately, I have met way too many people in life filled with potential, but they never reached true success—it’s not enough. This is all up to you. All you need is self-discipline and to stop wasting time. Begin to do the things that will take you closer to your goals in life.

You can do this. Now is your time!

Let’s make it happen!

6 Ways to Control Allergens at Home

Allergies are no joke. And many people suffer because of common airborne particles like dust, mold, and dander.

While you can’t do much to control these allergens outside your home, inside is another story — and there are actually a few strategies that can help.

Do you deal with allergies? Want to reduce them around your home? These cleaning and maintenance tips could help:

Know your problem areas. Cleaning your house frequently is critical to reducing allergens, but make sure to focus extra on allergy-causing areas, like the shower (and shower head), shelves and knick-knacks that collect dust and any carpeting or rugs.

Don’t let laundry pile up. If you have a washing machine, allowing wet or damp laundry to sit can breed mold and irritate allergies — not to mention it can pose more serious health risks.

Use the right tools. Try a vacuum with a HEPA filter, allergen-specific air filters for your HVAC system (which you should change every few months) and portable air purifiers in your bedroom or bathroom.

Keep temperatures low. Lowering your air conditioning may lower your home’s humidity levels, which would reduce the chances of growing mold or mildew.

Decorate with plants. Consider getting some carefully chosen house plants. Aloe vera, snake plants, and English ivy can help filter the air in your home.

Opt out of carpeting. Installed carpet attracts and holds onto allergens. Switching to hardwood or tile with area rugs can make a big difference.

Developing healthy habits — like taking off your shoes indoors, bathing pets regularly, and keeping dirty dishes out of the sink — can help as well. Get in touch if you’d like more home tips.

Vegas Shows Returning in November

Finally, we’re able to announce some shows returning to the Las Vegas Strip in November.

We already knew that the ladies favorite show, Thunder from Down Under, will be back in the showroom at Excalibur. The guys will be masked and will not come out into the audience, but hey, beefcake is beefcake.

The fabulous Australian Bee Gees will also be back in the same room.

Comedy clubs are returning to the Tropicana, in the 2nd floor showroom on November 4, and the Stratosphere has reopened its club in the 2nd floor shopping mall.

Absinthe at Caesars is a terrific show and they are ready to welcome everyone. The show has deleted some of its aerial acts, but I am sure the replacements will be terrific.

And now the big news…

Carrot Top will be back at the Luxor, though he will be moving showrooms. He will be in the old Cris Angel room, which last year hosted the Cirque show, Run.

Also appearing there will be the burlesque show Fantasy that had shared a showroom with Carrot Top before. With 1700 seats, they will still have to scale it down to hold no more than 250.

David Copperfield will return to MGM, but will move to the Grand Garden area.  The Jabbawockeez will also return to MGM, but will move into MGM Grand Garden.

Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club, which used to be in MGM’s underground mall, will move to Studio A and B Ballrooms. All tickets for all shows must be purchased online to begin with, no walk up sales allowed.

So grab a plane to Las Vegas. Still plenty of things to see on the strip and many great restaurants are now open. SunBuggy Fun Rentals and ATV Tours are open—you’ll be able to cross over the dam once again and balloon rides are tons of fun. Visit the Venetian and see the gondoliers or the dancing waters at Bellagio.

4 Things to Remove from Your Life

On the road to success, it’s important to be focused and don’t have anything weighing you down. Unfortunately, many people carry around unnecessary baggage and it becomes a big hindrance in trying to achieve their dreams.

In order to be successful you have to surround yourself with positive influences. You must also understand that if you want true success, you are going to need to remove some things from your life.

Let me encourage you today to take inventory on the following areas. Are any of these stopping you from achieving your goals?

1) Toxic friends

You are who you hang with. You become a product of your own environment. Who are you surrounding yourself with? It’s important that your circle of influence is one that is going to lift you up, encourage you, and help you achieve your dreams.

Toxic friends are only going to bring you down as the majority of stuff that comes out of their mouths is negative. They come up with a problem for every solution.

Are your friends lifting you up or are they bringing you down? Find friends that are going to help you grow and help you get to a higher level. If you’re the smartest person in the room then you are in the wrong room. Surround yourself with winners.

2) Living in the past

Don’t look back, you’re not going that way. Whether your past was good or bad, it’s still in the past.

All of us have something in our past that we may regret, or we’ve had circumstances happen beyond our control. What we can control is how we respond. Make the decision to become better and not bitter.

Your past does not equal your future, today is the beginning of the rest of your amazing life. Take all of your failures and use them as learning opportunities, get excited about what’s ahead.

3). Stress

In this life we will have challenges. Learn to accept the challenges and view them as opportunities.

So many people create their own stress because they are not organized, they tend to fly by the seat of their pants. Plan the night before what your next day is going to be like. Be prepared, write out your plan. You’ll find doing this will reduce stress.

Learn to have an attitude of gratitude. Wake up each day being thankful for all your blessings along with all of your challenges. Look in the mirror and say this with a smile, “I am too blessed to be stressed.”

4) Excuses

There is a killer disease of success and it is called “Excusitus.” When someone suffers from this disease, they never come close to reaching their full potential. It’s never their fault—always someone else’s. Anyone can find a million reasons why they will not become successful.

The key is to forget that and understand you have a big WHY to focus on. This is what will help you become successful.

Stop making excuses and break out a big piece of paper, and on the top of that paper write out the word WHY. Underneath that, write out all the reasons you must be successful, there are no more excuses. You must have a burning desire to do what it takes to achieve success.

Are there some things you need to remove from your life? Are there some habits holding you back? You have an amazing opportunity and you are gifted with incredible talent. Now is the time to make the decision to go after the life that is designed for you. You can do this!

Have a super fantastic week!

The 2020 Peachtree Village International Film Festival

The 2020 Peachtree Village International Film Festival

Celebrating 15 years of accomplishments in independent film!

By Vanessa Hundley, aka DJ Audioprism
Entertainment and Life Scrivener

The 2020 Peachtree Village International Film Festival (PVIFF) takes on a virtual format this year, bringing us four days of independent films, music, and technology from a global array of creators! With $50,000 in cash prizes, Q&A screenings with featured celebrities, brand and studio executives, and workshops and panels meant to engage, this Oscar-qualifying event has raised the voices of many of the world’s best burgeoning entertainment visionaries. It was founded in 2005 by James “JB” Brown and Len Gibson, both powerhouses in business and film industries with a string of accomplishments and accolades to their names. Both have experience in front of, behind and all around the camera, and bring that knowledge and dedication to creating a film festival that embraces the whole filmmaking community with an “it takes a village” perspective.

Any of our readers know that we here at No Strings Attached E-News (NSAEN) are ourselves passionate about shining lights on stories, skills, and expertise of all kinds, especially in the fields of television and film. And so we are thrilled to announce that for 2020, NSAEN is the sponsor of the PVIFF Audience Choice Award! The winner of the award will receive a spotlight interview on The Director’s Chair with Jonathon Thompson, a feature article on their entry and their journey as a filmmaker to this point. We sent a few questions to Len & JB to get a bit of an insider look at the festival and what they are expecting this year!

*The Peachtree Village International Film Festival is celebrating its 15th year this year. Tell us a little about that first year and your inspiration for forming the festival.

JB: The first year was pretty amazing. We set out to intentionally do something that was needed in the film and TV industry in Atlanta and for the World. Len had the idea after talks with Mr. Charles Johnson of the Sweet Auburn Spring Fest and came to me and asked my thoughts. I loved it and we started from that point, 15 years ago.

Len: Our first year was fantastic, it’s always great seeing a dream realized. After touring multiple film festivals with the African American Cinema Gallery (AACG) I had the unique opportunity to see what was missing at festivals around the world. Once I experienced this, one of my goals was to produce a film festival that would not only entertain but educate young filmmakers as well. We achieved this year one with the festival by ensuring our panels, workshops, and our awards ceremony provided as much educational value as it was entertaining. 15 years later we are still striving to offer the very best in educational entertainment.

*In 2020, we have seen a great explosion in the use of online forums due to the pandemic. The PVIFF is an online experience this year — how has the process of setting up a virtual production been for you?

JB: The process has been different obviously in regard to scheduling talent panels, workshops, and our closing night gala. We have multiple teams of people working behind the scenes to ensure that technically things go as planned, or close to it. We’ve been able to observe multiple online platforms and events to see what works and what doesn’t. We are excited that we will have access to the entire world by having the festival online, so I guess you can say the pandemic gave us lemons and we are looking to make lemonade.

Len: The process has been enlightening. Being able to still bring to the world our festival in the midst of the pandemic is a blessing. With having the festival virtual it takes more attention to detail with extreme time management because everything has to be prepared much earlier. It’s challenging but also fun. We’re able to really get a bird’s eye view of what our team is capable of.

*You are a big supporter of independent creators. Tell us about some of the creators we can look forward to seeing in this year’s festival.

JB: We have multiple films. I’d say at least 50 + that we are showing. One in particular is a film called State Of Madness based out of the Dominican Republic. It’s a period piece that happens to be based on a true story. It was extremely well shot and casted.

Len: We have some really strong films of various genres this year. Some of the creators we are excited about are Jevon Dewand, who directed, wrote, and starred in our centerpiece film Hate. Leticia Tonos, who directed our international spotlight film State of Madness. There is also Switched at Love, directed by Jamal Mcwhorter, and short film, Wow, directed by Justice Gamble and Alex Benjamin, and many more.

*The PVIFF is an Official Oscar Qualifying event. What qualifies an event for Oscar consideration?

Len: You have to meet various qualifications such as screening a large percentage of your films in a traditional theater, provide awards for winners, and most importantly you have to receive a nomination by another qualifying festival or a voting Academy Awards member.

*During the festival’s four days, what else can we expect to see between the film selections?

JB: Panels, workshops, a pitch tent, table reads, and our closing night gala.

*Besides submissions, how else can people be involved in this or future festivals?

JB: We are always open for internships and strategic partnerships and sponsors. We continue looking for first look situations with networks and studios that understand one of our strongest capabilities is to aggregate films. We are a film festival so that kind of makes us content rich. We also welcome people’s ideas for productions, and lastly we continue to support the local filmmaking community and educate the youth. We love supporting youth foundations that focus on the arts.

Be sure to mark your calendars and tune in starting October 29 for four days of content designed not just to entertain, but to educate and inspire! You can get more information on everything PVIFF by visiting:
