Sherri Demure, Queen of Allure

Sherri Demure, Queen of Allure

Thoughts on a friendship that was (and wasn’t) skin deep

By Vanessa Hundley, aka DJ Audioprism

Manabi Bandyopadhyay – “Be yourself, the world will adjust.”

“I’m Sherri Demure, Queen of Allure. I’m not that young, but I’m a whole lotta fun!” Those were the words that often accompanied Sherri Demure’s entrance into any room.  A mature, Black Irish woman, Sherri never met a stranger and could be found flirting, talking about the Mets or, if the opportunity was there, belting out any one of a number of songs for karaoke night. She hated to see anyone down in the dumps and was a huge cheerleader of anyone who was doing something of note or even thinking about it. And if you hung around her long enough, you would have heard some of her original songs, read a bit of one of her screenplays, and you’d feel as if you’d seen her beloved Times Square and New York nightlife for yourself. You would have been carried along in her passion for life and everything that was possible with it.

You also might have gotten to know about her “other” life, as Sean. She presented as Sherri or Sean seamlessly, presenting the face that was needed for her different professional and social interactions. But Sherri or Sean, she was the same fiercely intelligent, direct, charming entity at her core. Her voice might be higher as Sherri, but you could hear the same almost guttural growl in her singing and speaking when she got fired up and completely into the moment.

Sherri helped a lot of people find their truth. She was not without her own baggage and demons, but she would be the first to tell you about them and never let them hold her down for long if she could help it. As someone who didn’t feel able to live her whole truth until later in life, she wanted others to try and feel the confidence they needed to break free of whatever it was that masked their most authentic self.

That love for her fellow human beings left a deep impression, especially among her beloved trans and gay community in Midtown Atlanta. And her unexpected passing in September from cancer has left many of us wishing for even just one more day of her bright, positive attitude and no BS fortitude. And so it is that we come together this weekend to celebrate a life well lived, a love well given, and a friend that loved dressing herself up but never made the outside of a person the most important part of her relationship with them. We invite anyone who would like to join us at The Hideaway, Felix’s or The Midtown Moon in Midtown Atlanta for a special night on October 17, 2020, to honor Sherri Demure and other recently fallen but never forgotten members of the local nightlife scene.

We Summon the Darkness – Movie Review

SUMMON THE DARK LAUGHS

Movie Review – We Summon the Darkness

Review by Ray Schillaci

Artisan/Lionsgate and Saban Films has a great deal of dark fun in store with We Summon the Darkness. An ’80s era flashy trashy comedy thriller that has quite a few surprises. Three goth girls hit the road to see a heavy metal band amidst tales of a series of ritualistic murders. This sounds like the simple set up for a slasher film, but director Marc Meyers (My Friend Dahmer) and writer Alan Trezza (Burying the Ex) have a great deal more in store for us hitting upon the religious right, faux satanists, and fans of heavy metal.

Alexis, Val and Beverly, three young wayward souls, are on the road having fun with not a care in the world trekking through Indiana in 1988 to see a raucous heavy metal band. Alexis is the leader, strong-minded and a bit snooty. Val, the wild child with the weak bladder and bad hygiene. Beverly is the new girl to the group. She’s kind of like the wallflower of the three. Nowhere near as boisterous and not keen on getting drunk, high, or even getting laid.

The three appear to be ripe as victims in this kind of film. When they meet some young heavy metal dudes and decide to party with them, we almost guess the outcome. Almost. The first 31 minutes of this film is throwback fun until the big reveal that turns this kind of film on its ear. Now, one may wonder can it sustain? To a point, largely due to the three young women Alexandra Daddario (Baywatch (2017), Texas Chainsaw 3D), Maddie Hasson (TV’s Twisted, Impulse) and Amy Forsyth (TV’s Rise, Channel Zero). All three have a great chemistry, but it’s Forsyth who proves to be most memorable in every scene.

It should also be mentioned that Johnny Knoxville makes an appearance as a televangelist and there is not an ounce of humor in his portrayal. That’s not a bad thing. He emotes righteous indignation with a dangerous demeanor. Not over-the-top fanatical, but his presence comes with a warning when on screen. A big plus for this film.

There is a good amount of violence that could turn some off. At the same time, there’s the nostalgia and dark humor of it all that makes the ride well worth it. We Summon the Darkness supplies thrills, chills, and nervous laughs that are not for the easily offended or for those that demand too much from a horror film. A good mix to take your mind off these COVID times.

Currently, We Summon the Darkness is available on DVD, Blu-ray, Redbox and Netflix

The Wolf of Snow Hollow – Movie Review

A HOWLING GOOD TIME

Movie Review – The Wolf of Snow Hollow

Review by Ray Schillaci

Orion Classics has a very quirky Halloween entry this year. The Wolf of Snow Hollow is part off-beat comedy, horror, murder mystery, thriller and runs a close second to one of my favorites, An American Werewolf in London. Once again Jim Cummings proves to be a triple threat as writer/director and star of this fanciful frightmare that has us guessing until the very end who is who.

Cummings plays John Marshall, alcoholic, frustrated divorcee with a strained relationship with his teen daughter and the underdog of a deputy trying to fill his ailing sheriff’s big shoes, who is like a father figure to him. Oh, did I mention Marshall is also in need of anger management? Take this mix and add a very gruesome murder in the small mountain town that leaves some believing it could be the work of a werewolf. Of course, Marshall scoffs at the thought and becomes ill-tempered whenever any of his people insist it is not the sign of man or one of the usual beasts: wolf or bear.

As Marshall tries to keep his life under control (and the sheriff in check so he does not keel over), another murder takes place during a full moon. This one more violent than the other. The town panics. Marshall is chastised for not finding the killer in time, and he begins to lose his battle with alcoholism.

It all sounds very serious, but somehow writer/director Cummings injects a very bizarre sense of humor throughout, throwing us off by entertaining us with his frustration. We don’t exactly root for Marshall nor do we take pity, but we feel his pain and cannot wait until he can actually manage to get things together.

Robert Forster plays a grounded Sheriff Hadley. He can’t help but have faith in Marshall and acts much like a father figure. He’s too proud to acknowledge his illness and retire. He becomes more of a hindrance than a help, mentally, for Marshall. But, he is always pushing forward not eliminating any possibility of who or what the killer is. This was Mr. Forster’s last film, and for such a small independent he brings his “A” game as he has done with many of his roles including in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and Tarantino’s Jackie Brown.

The Wolf of Snow Hollow is the follow up to the acclaimed indie hit Thunder Road (SXSW Grand Jury Award) from writer/director/actor Jim Cummings. Cummings knows how to set an eerie mood that reminds us of the opening shots from Kubrick’s The Shining. But, he’s also captured the flavor of Hal Ashby with so many off-beat moments. The film is a mixed bag, but it works and is perfectly charming and gives off almost a fairy tale charm with Cummings as Little Red Riding Hood fending off his insecurities and abuses only to face something very monstrous.

The film has been dedicated to the late Robert Forster. A great way to end an illustrious career. It is currently playing in theaters (those that are open) and on demand. If you’re looking for laughs and gasps, The Wolf of Snow Hollow is well worth the trip, but hold tight to your popcorn because the scare is definitely there.

Never Give Up on Your Dreams

What are your dreams, your vision, what would you really like to achieve in this life? The first step is to know exactly what you want. Whatever your dream is, write it down and get focused. After you have done that, write out all the reasons WHY it’s important to achieve this dream. The next step is to list the benefits you will receive by achieving it. Then put together a plan of success; your dream now becomes a goal. After all, a goal is simply a dream with a plan.

Now the question is, how bad do you want it? Are you willing to do whatever it takes to make this dream happen? If you want to have true success, it’s going to take a 100% commitment. You must never look back and never give up, persistence and consistent work ethic are vital.

Pursuing your dreams comes along with many blessings and benefits, and I would like to give you some reasons why you should never give up on them. Every subject is part of success and you have to go through them in order to have your dreams come true.

1) Failure

Failure is part of success. Unfortunately, most people do not pursue their dreams because of fear of failure. But we have to fail in order to succeed, this is how we learn and grow.

Let me encourage you to read biographies of successful people. You will find every single one of them has experienced failure. Michael Jordan said it best, “I missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games, 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot… and missed. I failed over and over and over again in my life, that is why I succeed.”

If we can learn anything from all successful people, it would be to never give up on our dreams because we have fear of failure.

2) Persistence

The road to success is always under construction and I promise that you will go through difficulties, obstacles, and challenges. All of this is part of building your character.

Persistence is something that can only be learned through tough times. If we never fall down, we could never learn how to get back up. And every time we get back up, we become stronger and more capable of achieving our goals.

The word “quit“ should never come out of your mouth again, persist until you succeed.

3) Enjoy the journey

When you have big dreams, you are going to have small successes along the way. Make sure you celebrate your successes and celebrate life. By doing this, the small victories that you have help push you through to the next goal.

Before long, you will find that your dreams are coming to reality.

On the road to success, there are so many blessings; enjoy the ride.

4) Success is very close

What amazes me most is that so often people are on the verge of achieving their dreams and then they give up. If they only knew how close they really were!

Sometimes all it takes is one more phone call, one more week of determination and commitment, or just one more late night working on your passions.

No matter what, never give up. So often, people surrender far too soon. We truly can’t see what the future holds for us, but we can keep working daily to achieve our dreams.

5) We are setting an example

For those of you who have children or grandchildren, whether you realize it or not, they are watching you. You are setting an example. It’s up to you and it’s your choice to decide if that example is going to be good or bad.

Do we want our children to say that we gave up on our dreams or that we lived our life with a passion to achieve them? We can set the example for future generations—what a great legacy to leave behind!

You have a dream, how bad do you want it? Going forward, make a 100% commitment that you are never looking back and you are going to make those dreams come true.

Have a super fantastic week!

“Ethan Frome” by Edith Wharton

I first encountered Ethan Frome (published in 1911) among the packed-away college books of one of my older siblings.  I was about nineteen at the time.  The arrangement of title and author on the book’s cover had me confused at first: I didn’t know which was which.  In any case, I started the book that night and completed it in a single sitting.

The title character lives with his wife, Zeena, on a farm in New England.  The landscape is lonely, cold, and bleak; so too is this marriage.  Zeena is morbidly preoccupied with her various infirmities and Ethan is her human workhorse.  He is described as a quiet and able man whose private, passionate dreams of happiness have been almost completely crushed.  But that changes when Mattie Silver, Zeena’s cousin, comes to stay in the Frome household.  Ethan and Mattie immediately warm up to one another, but their mutual attraction is destined for a dreadful nonfulfillment.

Every detail in the novel contributes effectively to the drama that unfolds: ‘…we came to an orchard of starved apple-trees writhing over a hillside among outcroppings of slate that nuzzled up through the snow like animals pushing out their noses to breathe’.  And Ethan himself is described as ‘a part of the mute melancholy landscape, an incarnation of its frozen woe, with all that was warm and sentient in him fast bound below the surface’.

Many readers might dismiss Ethan Frome as simply depressing.  It could also be argued that the author unconvincingly contrived a predicament of hopelessness for Ethan and Mattie.  Why not run away from their prison-like existence on the farm, assume a new identity and start over?  Whatever the consequent risks, such an option is preferable to suicide!

But for me, Wharton’s rendering of this material transcends any of its shortcomings.  Even the depressing elements attain a grim beauty (Ethan’s search for Mattie after their failed suicide is a heartbreaking example).  Also, the author could have argued that innumerable lovers have ended their lives together under the pressure of circumstances far less desperate than that of Ethan and Mattie.  Therefore, what these two do (or attempt to do) is at least psychologically plausible.

Wharton’s view of romantic love, and life in general, was decidedly pessimistic.  She once said: “Life is the saddest thing, next to death.”  While I do not share this outlook, her Ethan Frome touched me deeply when I read it that first time many years ago; and it continues to do so.  Also, it cannot be denied that Ethan and Mattie’s awful fate has played out, in one way or another, in the lives of many people down through the ages.  The only hope thus left is a life and love beyond this life.  But such hope is absent from the stark, devastating vision of Edith Wharton’s novel.
