My recent journey to the United Kingdom was nothing short of unforgettable, filled with moments of inspiration, dynamic events, and encounters with some of the most creative and forward-thinking minds in the arts and entertainment world.
A standout highlight was the meet-and-greet hosted by the remarkable Esther Austin, a respected TV talk show host and magazine publisher. The event was held at the elegant Kensington Thistle Gardens Hotel, drawing an impressive cross-section of talent, each contributing their unique voice to the creative blend of cultures from around the world.
Among the distinguished guests were author Marcus Watts, whose storytelling bridges personal experience and cultural commentary; fashion guru JAMA, celebrated for his avant-garde, boundary-pushing designs; and film director Claire Leach, whose visionary work continues to push cinematic narratives into new territory. Also in attendance were screenwriters Greg Wong and Stephen Banks, whose works reshape perspectives in contemporary storytelling.
The room pulsed with the rhythm of ideas and cultural exchange. Dancer Tacy Zhao spoke about her performance as an interpretive artist, while editor and producer Janet Awe shared insight about her latest projects. Innovator Zhiliang Chen treated attendees to a tasting of his original herbal liquor blend, a sophisticated fusion of natural ingredients and artisanal craftsmanship.
The following day, a traditional British tea was enjoyed at the historic restaurant inside the Courthouse Hotel, located in the heart of Soho. The restaurant is listed as a former magistrates’ court, retaining its original features, including oak paneling and birdcage light fixtures. This unique setting provided a dramatic yet intimate atmosphere, where my colleague and I met for an enjoyable afternoon, surrounded by the echoes of London’s legal history. The space is adorned with artwork, enhancing its historical charm. The menu also featured classic tea accompaniments, as well as a standout dish, the delightfully seasoned curried chicken.
Another unforgettable encounter took place at BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) with the inspiring Alby James, OBE, a veteran theatre director and screenwriting mentor who has championed diversity and inclusion across the British film and television industries. Our conversation covered his trailblazing work empowering emerging talent and building more inclusive spaces in the arts.
Later, I attended the BFF Filmmakers Club, a networking event hosted by Roseita Royce, President of the British Film Festival, which gathered producers, directors, and writers under one roof. The synergy in the room was electric, a powerful reminder of the community that binds creatives across genres.
One of the most heartfelt moments of my trip was a luncheon with the esteemed Bonnie Greer, OBE, playwright, author, critic, and prominent cultural figure. Over an intimate meal with Alby James and Esther Austin, Bonnie and I reflected on our shared upbringing in Chicago. We found striking parallels in our journeys, both of us shaped by the Windy City’s complex history, and both deeply committed to using our voices to challenge, uplift, and transform.
My time in London also included a visit to the exclusive Soho House, where I had the pleasure of meeting Alain Bindels, a venture capitalist passionate about supporting bold, future-focused artistic projects. Our discussion was wide-ranging, touching on the convergence of finance, innovation, and creative risk-taking.
From there, I traveled to the charming seaside town of Torquay, where I had the privilege of meeting Errol Brown, a member of the singing group called the “Chosen Few” and a renowned music producer at Jam Shack Studio. He is currently producing Anna Fordham, known as Jelly Bean, and Errol is presently working with artists in several genres of music.
Returning to London, I attended Settin’ Up Shop, an energetic cultural event in Brick Lane that coincided with SXSW London. Actor and producer Idris Elba was a featured guest. Idris is recognized throughout the world for supporting and speaking passionately about creative ownership and the importance of nurturing local talent. Brick Lane continues to affirm itself as one of the UK’s most exciting creative neighborhoods, a canvas for emerging artists, fashion disruptors, and bold entrepreneurs.
On my final day, I enjoyed a relaxed and soulful lunch at a Kensington High Street Indian restaurant with Katie Rose. Katie Rose is a London-based singer, composer, conductor, and writer, renowned for her innovative and inclusive approach to music. Described by The Guardian as a “fine singer” and by fRoots Magazine as “an eye (and ear) opener,” she is dedicated to harnessing the transformative power of voice and song. An accomplished vocal coach currently performing at CoCo’s Restaurant in Crystal Palace, known for its historic architecture and sweeping views, but also for its vibrant artistic community and cultural programming that continues to draw audiences from across the city.
None of these extraordinary experiences would have been possible without the warmth, support, and thoughtful coordination of Esther Austin, whose tireless work behind the scenes made this journey seamless and magical. Her passion for uplifting voices and creating platforms for authentic storytelling is reflected in everything she does.
