Gerard Manley Hopkins—Poems

British Jesuit and poet Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844 - 1889). (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

Gerard Manley Hopkins was born in Essex in 1844 and died in 1889.  He was a priest and a teacher, and he also wrote poetry.  However, he was little known as a writer during his lifetime.  But since the publication of his work in 1918, he has been recognized as one of the greatest poets of the nineteenth century.

I should say from the outset that Hopkins is not always easy to understand.  In that respect, he is comparable to his contemporary, Emily Dickinson, the great American poet.  He is also like her in that repeated efforts to understand his words can be very rewarding.  Readers who have an appreciative feel for Shakespearian expressions are off to a good start when it comes to understanding Hopkins.  A love for the wonders of nature will also help.  Hopkins loved the trees and the birds and the clouds and all the other features of the natural realm:

‘I walk, I lift up, I lift up heart, eyes,

Down all that glory in the heavens to glean our Saviour…’

And from the same poem (“Hurrahing in Harvest”):

‘These things, these things were here and but the beholder

Wanting…’

A religious consciousness is expressed in the first two lines, a scientific consciousness in the latter two.  After all, the universe had been in existence long before the human mind appeared to see it, to contemplate it.

Many of these poems are brief, but others are quite long.  “The Wreck of the Deutschland” concerns the plight of five nuns who had been exiled from Germany and were subsequently drowned in a shipwreck.  This poem is about twelve pages long and has an epic feel about it.  Another shipwreck poem is titled “The Loss of the Eurydice”, which is also longer than most of Hopkins’s poems.

A dedicated priest, it is not surprising that his poems are loaded with religious references, but he steers clear of worn-out terminology; everything is expressed in fresh terms: ‘I am soft sift / In an hourglass,’ is another way of stating that we are dust, and to dust we shall return (Genesis 3:19).  And when he invokes the protection of a guardian angel in behalf of a boy who has just received first communion, he says:

‘Frowning and forefending angel-warder

Squander the hell-rook ranks sally to molest him…’

I love the image of a frowning guardian angel; frowning, not at its innocent charge, but at the forces of evil and corruption that menace him.

Perhaps my favorite poem concerns the enigmatic sadness of a young girl:

‘Margaret, are you grieving

Over Goldengrove unleaving?’

For me, this poem evokes those mysterious sorrows of childhood which often elude the understanding of even the most sympathetic parents.  Hopkins, however, seemed to grasp what it was that afflicted the heart of this child whenever she saw the fallen leaves of Goldengrove:

‘It is the blight man was born for,

It is Margaret you mourn for.’

Become a Champion in Life

This coming Sunday, we will be glued to our TV sets watching the Super Bowl. At the end of the game, a champion will be crowned. And when the players step up to the podium to receive the trophy, we will recognize them as Super Bowl champions.

The reality is in order for someone to become a champion, first and foremost, he or she has to become a champion with their daily disciplines. They have to train hard, control their diets, and make a lot of sacrifices. It takes a disciplined life to become a champion.

How about you? Do you want to be a champion in life?  If so, you have to understand that it’s going to take a true commitment and a lot of discipline. The way you live your daily life determines what you can achieve. If you make the decision to live the lifestyle of a champion, as time goes on people will recognize you as a champion.

The first step is to have a clear and concise goal. You should know exactly what you are aiming for. For example, an athlete who aims for an Olympic gold medal with intention will live differently from those who don’t have any clear goal. Your goal should inspire you, and motivate you to work hard and do what it takes to achieve success.

It’s also important that you think big and aim high. The goal that you have should inspire you to do your best. It should be realistic, but it also should be challenging enough to get you out of your comfort zone and make you work hard.

Once you know exactly what you want to accomplish, put together a plan and then take action. Athletes know what kind of training they need to go through to prepare for success. At the same time, you should have a clear plan on what it’s going to take to achieve your goal. Find out what kind of skills and knowledge that you need. Once you’ve done that, go for it!

The goal that you set should be a powerful source of motivation. It’s important to know exactly what you want and, whenever you feel discouraged, remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing. The journey will be difficult, but also worth it.

It’s important to step out of your comfort zone, which will help you increase your productivity. You have to go the extra mile. If you want true success, you have to do a little more than what is expected.

Whatever field you are in, please understand that competition is good. Make the decision to be at the top of your game, many people fall into the trap of just being average. Remember, you are designed for greatness. In order to be a champion, you have to do what most people are not willing to do. It’s going to require a lot of extra effort.

Be the absolute best at what you do, and never settle for mediocrity. Make the decision to become a champion in life. You can do this.

Have a championship week!

AREA 15 Keeps Adding Things to Do!

Art in Motion at AREA15. (Photo: Laurent Velazquez)

The opening of AREA15 is one of the great new adventure, fun, and out-of-this-world places to visit in Las Vegas.  Filled with plenty of art, entertainment, dining, and a great new “grocery store” Omega Mart. Axe throwing, zip line, miniature golf, Wink World—new venues inside are opening weekly.  The new art gallery Meow Wolf, imported from its original location in Santa Fe, brings us Omega Mart, a 52,000-square foot exhibit that plays fast and loose with a superstore concept. (Absolutely crazy items!)

Try the great restaurant Oddwood, or the soon to open Tod English’s The Beast.  AREA15 has plans to open Lost Spirits (an interactive distillery tour), Emporium (a combination of  arcade games with booze), and Five Iron Golf (a golf simulator along with a full bar).  They have viewing parties for football or hockey games, great outside venues for numerous events, videos, and interactive things to try.

You can’t go wrong by visiting AREA15. Also on board is their Valentine’s Dinner, I can’t recommend enough.

We’ve All Had These Situations… Right?

Thanks to the fantastic photographers of these images.

This says:  “A grizzly bear paw, from a sedated bear that’s about to be tagged and released.”

The paw that refreshes my mind… not to mess with grizzlies.

3 Steps to Help You Become More Focused

If you truly want to accomplish your goals, I believe it’s important to master the art of focusing like a laser so you can aim and achieve any target that you want in life.

Having true success will require new skills, strategies, and consistent positive habits. I have found that we really can’t acquire these skill sets and positive habits if we have not mastered the art of maintaining a laser focus.

The first step in being laser focused is to really understand what that means. When you are laser focused, you are bringing together all your energy and focus on one thing at a time.

Laser-like focus means aligning your thought patterns, belief systems, and actions with your goals on a consistent basis. If you want to have success in life, you need to align yourself with your goals.

Being laser focused will help you accomplish greater results. You can only achieve excellence when you realize your vision to the fullest. You will also find that you’ll get faster results when you are focused.

I have found that far too many people focus on too many things at once and they end up being mediocre in all the things. When you become laser focused, you will find that you’ll master the art of consistency.

There is no doubt about it that if you want to get to a high-level in life, you will need a laser-like focus. Here are three steps that will help you to become more focused.

1) Be crystal clear with what you want to accomplish.

The first step is to find out what your purpose is and then make sure you are clear about what you want to accomplish in this area. Find out what your passion is and what truly drives you in life.

It’s very important that these are YOUR dreams and goals, not anyone else’s.

Get excited about these goals and eliminate all the distractions that are stopping you from achieving them. Become laser focused until your ambitions become a reality.

2)  Put together a success plan.

Once you know what you want from life, the next step is to put together a plan to accomplish your goal.

Put in the research and find the people who are in life where you want to be so they can guide you on what actions to take.

Understand that it is not going to go perfectly. You will fail, but keep moving forward. Failure is part of success. You will improve and become better each day.

3) Prioritize and focus.

The goals are set and you have established a game plan. Now it’s time to identify the tasks that are most significant to achieving your goal.

Focus on what is important. I’m talking about your attitude, habits, and strategies that give you the quickest route towards achieving your set goals. Find out what counts and what doesn’t and focus on the activities that take you forward. Get rid of all the distractions that take away from your focus.

Life is short, and you are designed for greatness. Never settle for less. Find out what your passion is and set a goal and go for it. It’s going to take laser-like focus for you to have your dreams come true. You can do this.

Have a fantastic week!
