Vigilante Sting Exposing Fake Psychics

A group of online vigilantes organized by skeptical activist Susan Gerbic is on a mission to expose fake celebrity psychics. The psychic services industry has always been vulnerable to scammers feigning psychic abilities, but modern technology paves the way for them to gather more personal information about clients in order to deliver seemingly true readings, clouding the credibility of people with genuine talent.

The Forer Effect

Fake psychics have a few tricks up their sleeves to convince audiences of their credibility. A person with genuine psychic abilities has the skill and knowledge to connect spiritual energy with a client’s life: a truly accurate psychic is an energy reader, able to glean information about the client by examining their spiritual energy. Someone posing as a psychic, however, gathers as much information about the client as possible without reading spiritual energy and makes vague statements that could often apply to anyone. This is known as The Forer Effect, after psychologist Bertram Forer, who first discovered the manipulative effect of making general personality comments to convince someone they were being profiled accurately. This is a tactic employed by many disingenuous psychics, who may avoid making definitive statements (for example, “You struggle with depression”) and instead say something that could speak to a number of people (for example, “There has been deep sadness in your life at times.”)

Gathering Information

A true psychic reading doesn’t rely on ‘proving’ that the reader is genuine, and telling the client a lot of information they already know about themselves has little place in a genuine consultation. A false psychic, however, might take ‘cold readings’, using clues presented through a client’s body language or clothing choice to make vague guesses about them, which the client (who is likely already open to the idea that they’re speaking to someone with psychic powers) will back up and provide further information about. Susan Gerbic’s vigilantes, meanwhile, are looking into the ‘hot reading’, in which a psychic comes prepared with details about the client. They are able to use social media and general internet searches to find personal details easily, which they can then use in a consultation to gather further information about the client. They tend to keep readings vague, and backtrack when they get something wrong, signaling to the client that the spirits’ messages are vague or difficult to read clearly. While a genuine psychic reader is reading energy, a fake psychic is reading body language and looking for small clues that tell them when they’ve got it wrong so they can adjust their reading accordingly.

Finding A Genuine Psychic

A genuine psychic is able to give specific information about things which aren’t obvious, and guide you using the energy they read in a consultation. However, they should know their limits, so their website or advertisement should not claim that they can contact the dead: a true psychic does not claim this kind of control. Spirits may appear during a reading, but this is not something a reader has any power over. They should also not guarantee 100% accuracy: just as in any other field, this is not a logical human claim. It’s also a red flag if a psychic claims to be able to find a true love match: a psychic is able to read spiritual energy, but has no control over human will.

The psychic services industry is unregulated, which can make it difficult to navigate scams and find genuine readers. Susan Gerbic’s team uses fake Facebook profiles to catch disingenuous psychics and then posts the evidence online, so it’s possible to find psychics who have been proved fake. Those who are interested in meeting with a psychic should research carefully first and be wary of a reader who asks a lot of questions in the preliminary consultation, being mindful about the amount of personal information they share online.

3 Ways to Develop Self-Confidence

You will often hear that in order to have success, you need self-confidence. The bottom line is that sometimes it’s easier said than done. What does a person need to do to gain self-confidence, especially if they have lacked it for a long time?

When somebody starts a new opportunity like what we have here with RMS, it is a little more difficult to have confidence right out of the gate. Don’t let that discourage you, you have an amazing opportunity. It’s important to be patient but even more important to remain positive. Confidence comes from knowledge. The more knowledge you have about your industry and your products, the more confident you will become.

As I was reflecting on developing self-confidence this week, three areas came up in my mind which will help the process. Make a commitment right away to work on these. This not only applies to the business world, but it also applies to daily living.

1) Repetition

Repetition is the mother of all skill. I took up playing guitar late in life and certainly wish that I started a lot earlier; however, I have made a commitment to play at least 30 minutes a day. I still have a long ways to go but I have to remind myself that I am much better then I was and I’m continuing to improve, even though it may be a slow process. Yes, there are some musicians that when you watch them, you become amazed at their skills and great talent. The reality is, the only reason they got to where they are at today is because of repetition. The same applies to sports. When you watch professional athletes, please understand that it took years and years of practice and time in the gym to get them at a high-level.

The same applies in our business. The only way that you could become a master cold caller is by getting out there and doing it. You’re not going to be great from the beginning but I promise that you will improve. Repetition builds confidence.

2) Persistence

Whenever anybody tells me that they are going to give it the old college try and see what happens, I let them know that they are doomed to fail. The reason being is because of their attitude right from the beginning. As soon as something goes wrong, which it definitely will, they will give up. They end up rationalizing by stating that at least they gave it a try.

When you’re starting something new, you’re not going to be super confident from the beginning. It’s important that you take that repetition and keep going. Persistence is the key to success. Your attitude needs to be that, “I am committed to this 100%. I’m not looking back. I will persist until I succeed. There is no Plan B.”

3) Positive Self-Talk

So many people fail in this area and unfortunately it becomes natural to them. They may look in the mirror and make negative comments about themselves—about being too fat, not attractive, too skinny, etc., etc.

In order to have self-confidence, it is imperative that you are constantly building yourself up. Perhaps in your life, your parents may have put you down or others told you that you weren’t going to make it. Don’t listen to that anymore, you need to be your number one supporter. It’s time to start believing in yourself and your future.

Starting today, make a commitment that there is no more negative self-talk. Everything going forward is super positive. Believe in yourself and build yourself up and watch your confidence grow.

Building self-confidence is a process and it may not happen overnight. You will find also that it is ongoing and that’s why it’s important to make these three practices part of your daily living.

Repeat – Persist – Positive Self-Talk

Today is the beginning of the rest of your amazing life. Enjoy the journey and walk in confidence.

Have a super fantastic week!

Lip Smacking Foodie Tours

A fabulous find for people visiting Las Vegas as well as locals. The best Foodie Tour I have taken in any city in the country. Yes, you can say I am a definite fan. Donald Contursi opened a few years back and has taken the city by storm in finding fabulous and unique places to dine. His guided tours lead you to four restaurants, ones you would probably never attempt to go to on your own.

Locals love his tours and once you go on one, you will return to try a new one on your next trip. The expert guides will entertain you with insider knowledge about the city. When you arrive at each venue, there is no waiting. Food is of the highest quality and usually the chefs will come and introduce themselves.  Most tours number 12-20 but they can accommodate corporate groups of up to 250 with numerous guides.

In 2019 Lip Smacking Foodie Tours expanded into other markets including San Jose, Santa Monica, Seattle, and St. Louis. Don has received every award the city offers including Best Tour, Best Food Tours, Best Date Night Spot, Best Food/Beverage Tour Operations. Now he has added Best Fine Dining and Best Brunch by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.  Lip Smacking Foodie Tours has also been given the preferred partner member of Virtuoso, the invitation-only member network catering to luxury travel advisors. Magic Time Machine restaurants in San Antonio and Dallas are a real throwback for adults. Both locations are packed at the moment they open with young and old alike. The theme here is everything funny and whimsical. Booths are designed cleverly such as a box of crayons, a tree house, the inside of an old bus, or maybe a giant box of fruit. The waiters are characters such as Wonder Woman, Cat Woman, Cinderella, Captain Jack Sparrow or Ace Ventura. Starting with the salad bar in the inside of a convertible, the amount of food is massive. A prime rib, cut in half, filled with a crab mixture, massive baked potato, two ears of corn and a side of mushrooms can be had for the incredible price of $19.00—Not to be missed. www.magictimemachine.com

Buckhorn Salon & Museum in San Antonio, one block from the famous River Walk is a privately run museum and eating establishment. Originally owned by Albert Friedrich, the Buckhorn has a truly unique collection which began in 1881 and started out as horns, which quickly became the Buckhorn Hall of Horns. Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders frequented the place.

“Courtesy of Special Collections, University of Houston Libraries.”

Friedrich amassed his collection from his own hunting trips, and from other hunters and trappers, eventually acquiring the collection of a hunter named Capt. Ernest Dosch. Early on, Friedrich would swap a drink for anyone who would bring in a set of horns to be displayed. A collection of firearms and a mirrored bar were added to the collection of horns. In addition to the horn collection, visitors will also find rattlesnake art and memorabilia of both Native Americans and the cowboy culture.

As you dine among over 350 stuffed heads of every animal imaginable, you can feast on everything from ribs, chicken, Texas Brisket to burgers. The cafe boards up its doors at 3 p.m. sharp, so make your way in early. 210-247-4004 318 E. Houston St., San Antonio, Texas.
