Growth-Oriented vs. Goal-Oriented: Which One Are You?

I recently heard an interview that was done with a very successful person. This individual accomplished great things in life and he was sharing that he recently lost his motivation and drive, and he didn’t know what to do about it. The person with whom he was speaking shared something which I thought was very profound. He said, “The problem is that you have become only goal-oriented. You need to change your thinking to become growth-oriented.” I thought to myself, “How true that is and it makes total sense.“

Now don’t get me wrong, in no way am I saying that you should not set goals. Setting goals is important if you want to achieve success because in order to have success, you must know exactly what you want. You also need to have a plan on how to get there.

This is what I have found, if you want to get better results, not only do you have to set goals but you have to develop a solid plan of growth.

When you are goal-oriented, it sets the direction but it does not get you to where you want to go. If you are not careful, you can restrict yourself and end up setting goals that do not require change or personal growth.

Growth-Orientation gives you determination to go to the next level. It challenges you to learn new skills and create new habits. When you are focused on exactly what you want, you will find there is something in your life that needs to change and you must grow. In order to achieve these goals, it’s going to require you to get out of your comfort zone.

Growth takes a lot of effort, especially when you’re practicing new skills and adopting new habits. As you begin to do this, you end up growing into who you need to be in order to achieve greater results.

Here’s the bottom line, goal-setting has an end game. Growth-Setting is a game that will never be over. You will find as you are on the road to success, it definitely is a journey rather than just a destination.

No matter what level you achieve, strive to grow no matter what. Never stop learning and don’t ever stop growing. Growth can be painful but it is definitely rewarding. Our growth tomorrow depends on the little things that we do today.

So keep setting goals, but change your overall thinking to growth. If you have found yourself unmotivated because of all the goals you have set and achieved, it is time to make a commitment to growth. No matter what level you achieve, there’s always going to be room for growth. When you commit to being growth-oriented, you will find yourself much more inspired and you will create much more joy in life. If you are breathing and you woke up this morning, you certainly can grow.

Going forward, rather than being just goal-oriented, change your thought pattern to becoming GROWTH-oriented. If you’re not growing, you are shrinking. Make that commitment to grow in every phase of your life and most importantly, enjoy this wonderful growth journey.

Have a super fantastic week!

Essential Steps to Protect Your Business in 2022

We have all seen how much uncertainty there is out there right now. We all need to be taking more steps to protect our businesses. As we look ahead to 2022, here are some necessary steps we should all be taking.

Look For Ways To Cut Costs

Look back at how your business performed during the pandemic. Identify any areas of your company that are no longer pulling their weight in a post-COVID-19 world. Consider giving up your office to avoid uncertainty and eliminate rental costs and other ancillary expenses. Think about ways that you can develop your employees instead of hiring new staff members. Research new technology and tools that will make processes quicker, such as AI software.

Get Good Legal Help

Talk to a lawyer before you make any significant business decision. Find out what you could be liable for in case of broken agreements, missed deliveries, or breaches of contract. Go over any new contracts with them to avoid being caught out. Talk to your lawyer about any kind of business expansion. Take advantage of their experience and their contacts. Get in touch with an immigration lawyer if you are considering hiring workers from outside the USA. Remember that work visas have strict requirements and the number of H2A visas for seasonal agricultural workers, for example, may be limited.

Boost Your Cybersecurity

Invest in high quality up-to-date protection for your business. Listen to the warnings that cybercrime and ransomware attacks are not going anywhere. Learn about whether the information your business stores using cloud technology could be vulnerable. Educate your employees on the steps they should be taking if they are working remotely or using company-owned technology. Talk to a cybersecurity expert to break down the essentials and to learn more.

Boost Your Online Strategy

Remember that your website is one of the most important elements to drive business. Look at the expected online sales numbers for the holiday season for further proof. Update your site regularly with expertly written content. Research your target audience to learn more about what they are looking for and what formats will be most effective, from videos to podcasts. Look at what your competition is doing and see what is working.

Use SEO for any written content but remember that user experience is just as important. Learn how Google has updated its software to eliminate spam. Bring on a social media specialist to get your brand out there. Use customer research to create a targeted digital marketing strategy. Focus on websites and social media channels that you know your customer base uses.

Lip Smacking Foodie Tours Is Now Doing “Pizza Tours” of Chicago

Lip Smacking Foodie Tours Starts with A Deep-Dish Pizza Tour in Chicago

After being amazingly successful in Las Vegas for over five years, Lip Smacking Foodie Tours is excited to announce its first venture into Chicago with its new, decadent deep-dish pizza tour. Now while I have tried two of the tours in Las Vegas, if I make it to Chicago, I’ll hope to be in on one of these new “Pizza Tours” and I bet it will my best night there.

Trying to put this all together, with people, parking, menus, hours and tour conductors, along with the perfect price point, can really be hard. Like a well-rehearsed orchestra everything must be down to the exact second. Well, Donald Contursi has done it once again, taking a cue from his many tours he offers daily in Las Vegas, along with some Seattle tours. He offers VIP service at the three flagships that put deep-dish on the map here, all in one unique, unforgettable outing.

Coming from Chicago, Donald who grew up on the city’s most iconic dish, has created the ultimate deep-dish tour that allows guests to skip the usual wait for a table or the wait times for ordering these hefty pies to bake. Instead, attendees enjoy pizza delivered fresh out of the oven in only 10 minutes, rather than the customary 45 minutes. Best yet, they can take any leftovers in their own personal doggy bag for a late night snack. At each stop, attendees also have the opportunity to sit beside different people, rotating from pizzeria to pizzeria to make a new batch of friends.

The tour’s stops represent a who’s who of the deep-dish world: Gino’s East on Superior Street with its fabled graffiti-clad walls and celebrity clientele; Pizzeria Uno on Ohio Street, which claims to be the originator; and Lou Malnati’s on Wells Street, famous for its butter crust crowned with lean sausage that covers the entire circumference of the pizza.

All are close to one another in the amazing, and sometimes missed area of Magnificent Mile. At each stop, attendees will enjoy a half-cheese, half-sausage pie, made with each establishment’s secret dough recipe passed down from generations and a proprietary sausage blend. There is also a vegetarian option upon request.

Each tour has a professional guide who provides entertaining and enlightening information along the way about these storied restaurants, as well as this dynamic metropolis. At $89 per person, along with an optional $35 beverage package available, this is a great evening out and a unique way to spend some time while meeting quality persons with the same tastes.

This group tour comes from Don’s sister company Finger Licking Foodie Tours. Although that one is geared toward locals and visitors alike, Contursi wanted to offer a tour specifically for business and convention groups, who make up such a sizable portion of travelers to Chicago.

About Lip Smacking Foodie Tours:

Quoting from a past press release “Lip Smacking Foodie Tours is the premier culinary walking tour in Las Vegas, garnering not only loyal fans but outstanding accolades. Its tours offer guests personalized service and VIP access to the best tables at the city’s most acclaimed restaurants – all without the hassle of waiting in lines or making reservations. Each tour is led by an expert guide who entertains guests with insider knowledge about the sights along the way. At each of four restaurant stops on The Strip or downtown, guests indulge in signature dishes, as well as receive a warm welcome from the chefs. Guests can sit beside different patrons at every stop, gaining new friends and networking connections. The tours are perfect for everyone from locals to tourists to business travelers, including corporate groups of up to 250. In 2019, Lip Smacking Foodie Tours expanded for the first time outside of Vegas to include San Jose, Santa Monica, St. Louis, Seattle and Vancouver BC.”

Recent honors include: “Best Tour”, “Best Food Tour”, and “Best Date Night Spot” by Las Vegas Review-Journal in 2020, 2019 and 2018; “Best Food/Beverage Tour Operations (Land)” by The World Food Travel Association 2018; “Best Tour”, “Best Fine Dining”, and “Best Brunch” by Las Vegas Review-Journal in 2017; “Best Tour” by Las Vegas Review-Journal in 2016; “Best Tour” by INVEGAS Magazine in 2015 and 2016; and “Best New Tour” by Thrillist in 2015; as well as inclusion in TripAdvisor’s “Top 3” tours in Las Vegas, and ranked #1 tour on Yelp.

Bronx Wanderers Now at the Westgate!

Tuesday night was the grand reopening of one of my favorite shows here in Las Vegas. The Bronx Wanderers are now playing at Westgate Hotel & Casino. Alan and Kathy Glist, also the producers of Menopause the Musical, really deserve a round of applause for getting Vinny Adinolfi and the group back. This lovely new showroom fits them perfectly and their opening was filled with an audience of A-List VIP entertainers. Among them was Tony Orlando, who will be celebrating sixty years in show business.

I love hearing the stories that brought Vinny to have the dream he always wanted and is now being fulfilled à la Las Vegas. The group brings back so many old songs we have loved over the years, and with a lot of great video clips and nostalgia. One of the very best shows in Las Vegas and definitely worth your time out.

United by their passion for great music, The Bronx Wanderers are led by father and master entertainer Vinny Adinolfi, who is a former chart-topping record producer. He is joined on stage by his son, Vinny “Vin. A” Adinolfi III, an Italian Brian Wilson who sings, arranges and plays several different instruments, as well as a killer hand-picked backup band. They have toured for the last 16 years and no one can compete with them for the heart and soul that they pour into their show.

The Bronx Wanderers have performances Monday through Thursday at 8 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the Westgate Cabaret. Find additional information and details at www.westgatelasvegas.com or www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, visit thebronxwanderers.com or follow the show on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.

Serves Me Right–Protect Your Investment

“Serves Me Right!”

By Florida Night Train

This is such a typical story, I am embarrassed writing about it. I admit I am a stubborn hard-headed “know it all” sometimes. Depending who you talk to, they might say “all the time”.  Just in case there are more like me out there, I want to share this story so maybe you will learn and save yourself time and money. The old values and the old sayings are there for good reasons! You know, the ones along the lines of, “You get what you pay for” and “You reap what you sow,” or “You get what you deserve”.

My Harley felt lonely so I decided to get some company for him. Moramoto back in early 2021 helped me get my dream bike; a BMW s1000rr. This beast top speeds at ~200mph out of the box and makes the envy of many sport riders, including cruise riders, might I say. Moramoto had the foresight to offer me an extended warranty with EFG (efgcompanies.com). Hear me out! This is not the type of extended warranty company that will give you unsolicited calls repeatedly like others do. They don’t need to. After a forty year track record, it stands for good reasons.

Before any of you accuse me of doing a shameless plug, think again. This is a true story and there is absolutely zero benefit for me in writing this, by any party. My reward and hope is that some poor soul out there might learn a good lesson through this piece and that I might spare them some time and money.

Fast forward to about May 2021, my bike (I call it “Morpheus”) showed a “DDT” code. It just was not riding right. Not thinking my bike is one of the most advanced racing pieces of machinery needing high-end expertise/diagnostic tools, I wanted to save time and money by taking it to a bike shop closer to me. I know, stupid. I have an extended warranty I thought, I’ll be fine. Shop owner (who shall remain nameless), talked a good talk for sure. It seemed busy and was close to me, so I left Morpheus there.

In fairness to the shop owner, they had good intentions but they just did not have the tools or knowledge to handle my bike. They were in over their heads… and toolbox. They attempted to take me into an elimination discovery process on my dime at an hourly rate of ~$125/hr. Several hours into it, after using my extended EFG warranty to “replace” a ~$1,200.00 ECU, many unreturned phone calls, emails, texts and messengers, I got my bike back this time with a “DDC” code within five minutes of riding it. I should add that this process took nearly 3 months. I missed Morpheus as if it was part of my heartbeat.

Then what? Well, I sheepishly saw my error for what it was and took Morpheus to the BMW guys in Tampa. Come to find out, the issue involved another ECU type of component along with wiring connectivity. The thing is, that particular ECU component was not quite as clearly called under the warranty as the original ECU and so by contract, and understandably, EFG declined this second claim. Now I was looking at well over ~$2,000.00 and more time separated from Morpheus. Had I taken it straight there in the first place, I would have wasted a lot less time… and money.

Not knowing I write for magazines using motorcycling as a “bridge” of sorts, this is where EFG really stepped up to the plate. I called in to further discuss my second claim with them. After several calls between the BMW tech and EFG, my claim was elevated to a more knowledgeable adjuster. The adjuster was super knowledgeable and courteous—I highly advise to remain calm and non-confrontational when you call adjusters. He spoke to me with clarity, verbal precision, and professionally so I could understand the intricacies of my Morpheus. It became a dialogue rather than a controlling confrontation. After careful consideration and in-depth discussion on the language of the warranty, it dawned on the adjuster and I that the second ECU functionality could be interpreted as much essential to the first ECU therefore making it fall under the warranty by its very nature. EFG honored my second warranty claim and Morpheus and I were reunited, freely coming in and out of this mad matrix.

Had I not dealt with the team at Moramoto offering me EFG, had I not bought EFG and had I not taken my Morpheus to the BMW team, I would be out well over ~$5,000.00, maybe even more with this other shop. The point here is obvious, you get what you pay for. I got what I deserved because I did not use good judgment and I took someone’s good intentions at face value. Consequences: a bunch of headaches, frustrations, wasted time, money, and energy.

EFG Companies exists for one reason only: to protect you by protecting your investment. Your vehicle is probably one of the most expensive purchases you’ll ever make. That’s why EFG focuses on safeguarding your investment with Repair, Maintenance, and Appearance Protection Products that keep you worry-free and your vehicle looking factory-fresh. They’ve got you covered with repair and maintenance products, debt protection products, and appearance protection products.

If you have an accident or your vehicle breaks down, EFG’s ultra-responsive Claims Administration team can steer you clear of the hassles and runarounds that are often associated with making a claim. Whether you are driving a new or used vehicle, an RV or a motorcycle, EFG is ready to get you back on the road as quickly as possible.

I highly recommend both dealers and buyers to consider including EFG in all their transactions, for peace of mind when the need arises. Now my Harley is ticked because I am only playing with Morpheus.

SAN DIEGO AIR & SPACE MUSEUM

The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park is home to a massive collection of classic military aircraft ranging from the dawn of flight through WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the jet age and beyond. The Museum also houses an International Aerospace Hall of Fame, honoring the inventors, engineers, pilots, and industrialists who created and built airplanes. Active military admission is free.

CABRILLO NATIONAL MONUMENT

Along the paths of Cabrillo National Monument sit the remains of coastal defenses built to protect the approaches to San Diego Bay. While visiting the park, you will find base-end stations, fire control stations, searchlight bunkers, and other remains of troubled times; lonely sentinels that now serve to guard our memories of the past. Housed in an old radio station, the exhibit, “They Stood the Watch,” shares the story behind these remains, and ranger talks are often given on weekends. The Cabrillo National Monument Foundation bookstore, located in the Visitor Center, offers several books about Fort Rosecrans and the military history of Point Loma. 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr, San Diego, CA 92106

LIBERTY STATION

Countless thousands of civilian and military passed through the gates of San Diego Naval Training Center in the course of its history. The base, now decommissioned, has been transformed into Liberty Station consisting of part residential community, part arts district, and part retail center. With many of the businesses housed in the historic structures that date back to the 1920s, just walking around Liberty Station can bring back proud memories for the more than a million military personnel who were trained there. There is also an Arts District.

I lived only 8 blocks away and have visited many times as well as stayed at the hotel. There is also a cultural district with galleries, artist studios, dance studios, restaurants and retail stores. Admission is free. 2701 Lytton St, San Diego, CA 92106

How to Be Energy Efficient When You Teach From Home

Remote working and teaching have really taken on new lives over the last year and a half. The COVID-19 pandemic caused many teachers across the country to have to educate their students from home.

There have been positives and negatives to e-learning. Some teachers struggle with keeping their kids engaged, but it has also proven to be effective in keeping people safe and distanced during the height of the pandemic. One of the benefits many people are touting about remote teaching is that it’s more energy-efficient. On the surface, it’s understandable why most people would assume that.

But, is it?

Sure, you’re not driving into work each day. But, if you’re having your lunch delivered via DoorDash, you’re still contributing to carbon emissions. Furthermore, you’re using more of your electricity each day than you would be if you were working in a school setting.

So, if you’re planning on teaching from home on a long-term basis, what can you do to be more energy-efficient? How can you do your part for the planet (and scale back your utility bills in the process)?

Invest in an Energy-Efficient Home

If you’re going to be spending most of your time in your home each day, it’s a perfect opportunity to make energy-efficient upgrades. You might consider building a new home or an addition to your current one with sustainable materials. But, if you’re happy where you are, there are still changes you can make to conserve energy, including:

  • Installing smart home technology
  • Upgrading your appliances
  • Getting new windows
  • Sealing your existing windows and doors
  • Investing in new insulation
  • Installing a new roof

While making upgrades to your home can cost money upfront, it’s a worthwhile investment if you’re going to be spending most of your time there. In the long run, these changes can have a positive impact on your utility bills, and you’ll conserve energy every day while you participate in e-learning.

If you have kids who are also learning from home in different areas of the house, these investments will “pay for themselves” even sooner. More people in the house means more energy use. Making energy-efficient changes with multiple people means big savings for you and a healthier environment for the future.

Change Your Daily Habits

Spending more time at home also means using more energy at home. You might have “normal” habits that you were used to when you had to go somewhere to teach in person. Those habits probably didn’t use much energy at the time. But, if you’re doing them frequently throughout the day, they can end up wasting more energy than you might realize. Some examples include:

  • Taking longer showers
  • Running the dishwasher more frequently
  • Having more lights on all day
  • Doing more laundry
  • Charging more electronic devices

Even your eating habits can make a difference when it comes to your energy consumption. As mentioned above, it’s tempting to get your lunch delivered every day, especially if you only have a short time between your classes and don’t want to cook.

But, the carbon footprint of food delivery services is high. The average passenger vehicle that food delivery services use emits 4.6 metric tons of greenhouse gases per year. On top of that, unless the restaurants you’re ordering from use recyclable or biodegradable packaging, materials like styrofoam take 500 years to decompose. Take the time to make your lunch every day, or meal prep at the beginning of each week so you have quick, easy options on hand whenever you need them.

By changing some of your daily habits while you’re at home, you’ll start to notice a big difference in how much energy you’re using and how much you were wasting before.

Set Up an Energy-Efficient Office

When you’re teaching from home, having a dedicated office space is a great way to stay motivated and productive. If it’s where you’ll be spending most of your day, do what you can to make environmentally positive changes. That could include things like:

  • Using natural lighting as often as possible
  • Upgrading to LED lights for lamps
  • Turning off your computer monitor when not in use
  • Opening the windows to let in a breeze

Additionally, take some time to “unplug”. It’s not only a good idea for your digital devices, but your well-being. Shut things down when you’re finished with work for the day and spend some time outside. Doing so can make you appreciate the environment even more, so your desire to live more sustainably will grow.

You might even end up teaching a lesson on it to your students.

Likely, e-learning is here to stay, at least in some parts of the country. There are plenty of aspects to it that keep teachers on their toes, including online safety, engagement, and technological issues. But, with a few changes, being energy efficient while you work doesn’t have to be something you stress over. Keep these ideas in mind while you’re teaching in an e-learning environment, and you can take pride in contributing to a healthier planet for your students.
