Surefire Ways to Overcome Procrastination

When it comes to achieving success, many people fall into the trap of procrastination. We have all done it. The intentions are always good but it’s easy to put things off.

If you find yourself talking about doing things tomorrow, next week, next month or when the time is perfect, now is the time to recognize this and stop procrastinating.

All of us need to mindfully keep ourselves encouraged and learn to stay motivated—the key is to take positive action. There is a difference between being productive and being busy. Make sure you’re not wasting your time on meaningless endeavors.

It’s important to build your own motivation. You are quite capable of motivating yourself just by doing a few things and putting forth the effort.

Most people have goals, but it’s important to remember what your WHY is. No matter what your dreams are, remembering what’s important to you helps you move into action.

If you have found yourself procrastinating, it’s important to circle back to the reason why you started. Whenever we lose sight of our goals, we can easily fall into bad habits. Procrastination creeps in when we forget our original whys. When we remind ourselves, it shifts our focus back to the things that truly matter. This is what increases your motivation.

It’s also important to visualize what you truly want. Visualization is one of the most powerful techniques that can drive your motivation. Whenever you set a goal, mentally picture yourself completing it successfully.

Visualization will help you motivate yourself to get the true desired outcome. The more vivid your visualization, the more powerful your motivation is going to be.

I have seen people struggle with procrastination because they strive for perfection. It’s important to understand that failure is part of the success journey, so don’t be too hard on yourself. The only way that you’re going to improve is to take action.

If you find yourself unmotivated, it’s okay to borrow motivation from other people. Read about people who inspire you, listen to podcasts or audiobooks that will pump you up, watch motivational videos to jump-start your day. Learn from those you admire who have achieved great success. They have created the way for you. Learn from their struggles, knowledge, and insights. This will allow you to believe in yourself and help you achieve your goals.

Celebrating your accomplishments along the way will also help you to stop procrastinating. It’s important to reward yourself even with little things. By doing this, you will instill a sense of pride and encouragement that will lift your spirits. Focusing on what you’ve done well will motivate you to perform even better.

Ultimately, you make the final decision when it comes to confidence and motivation. Your future looks amazing. Adopt the phrase TNT—today not tomorrow. Make the decision today. Do not procrastinate!

Have a super fantastic week!

Banachek- Greatest Mentalist in the World

At the media night, world-famous mentalist, Banachek was named “Mentalist of the Year” during the grand opening celebration of his marvelous new production, “Banachek’s Mind Games Live,” at The STRAT Hotel, Casino & SkyPod. The show was terrific and I would recommend it to all ages. I’ll be back soon.

Banachek was surprised on stage with a video from the International Magicians Society where he was presented this year’s Merlin award. The “Mentalist of the Year” title was given to him for the second time, a great honor for the most globally renowned magicians and mentalists since 1968.

“It is truly an honor to be considered ‘one of the greats’ by such an influential organization,” said Banachek. “I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to headline my own show in Las Vegas at The STRAT, and I can’t wait to challenge myself to take mind reading to new heights every night.”

Banachek performed his world famous act in the 600-seat STRAT Theater  which was filled with friends and family, and media, including Criss Angel and Colin Cloud.

After the show, guests were invited to attend an after-party ceremony on the 108th floor where you can view the whole city of Las Vegas. Among the guests were the beautiful cast of “FANTASY” at Luxor Hotel and Casino and the chiseled group of “Thunder from Down Under” at Excalibur Hotel and Casino.

Vice president and general manager of The STRAT, Stephen Thayer, and senior vice president of SPI Entertainment, Alex Schechter, welcomed Banachek to his new home at The STRAT.

Show times are schedule for 4 p.m. six days per week, dark Fridays. Ticket prices begin at $29 and are available by visiting thestrat.com/BanacheksMindGames. His website is banachek.com

The theater is located on the second floor with free parking. The Strat also has other great shows including Xavier Mortimer, which I wrote about last week, MJ Live, and coming this week the new show iLuminate which will be at 10 p.m.

The Green Knight — Movie Review

Movie Review – The Green Knight

Review by Ray Schillaci

I thought about my first time venturing back to a movie theater. Would it be comedy, action/adventure, horror? Did I feel a need to see Marvel’s Black Widow on the big screen and take the risk of being in a crowded movie theater or should I take a whimsical ride on Disney’s Jungle Cruise? Then, A24 rolled out David Lowery’s latest anticipated film, The Green Knight. A modern re-telling of King Arthur’s nephew, Sir Gawain and his journey to meet the legendary green behemoth. I was sold on writer/director David Lowery, his vision of the knights of the round table and the cast that included Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, and Joel Edgerton.

Writer/director Lowery first captured my attention with A Ghost Story where he gave us a ghost’s eye view of the world studying love, loss, legacy, and the contemplation of existence. Those are some big themes all rolled into one and could easily have audiences turn away for those with little patience. He is not a conventional filmmaker or storyteller.

Lowery paints in broad strokes and tends to explore many themes in his projects. Some may find his work confusing, aggravating, even tedious. But, the man is an artist in his own right. He defies the studio mentality and does not cater to the masses. Those of us that are willing to go along with his journey are awarded in the end with something very special and The Green Knight is no exception.

Dev Patel delivers a bravura performance as Gawain, ribald nephew of King Arthur. The young man is everything a virtuous knight is not. A whore-mongering man that loves his ale, food and over-indulges in all, never taking himself seriously. He does show affection for one particular prostitute, Essel (a very plain looking Alicia Vikander), who more than loves him and wishes to have a future with him. Although, his mother, sister of King Arthur, has other plans and works a bit of magic to shape her son’s destiny.

King Arthur gathers his knights of the roundtable and invites his nephew to join him at his side much to his surprise. Gawain hesitates, for he does not feel worthy and has no tales to tell as the other knights do. His uncle assures him the time will come and it certainly does as the dreaded Green Knight enters the chamber bringing all rivalry to a halt.

The ominous knight resembles a massive green tree trunk with a bellowing deep voice that issues a challenge. Even the bravest of knights does not take the offer. But, Gawain suddenly musters the courage to face him and Arthur assures him that what is taking place is merely a game. Now is his chance to have his own tale to tell. But, at what cost? His life? This could be his future to knighthood. To be remembered and develop a legacy.

Gawain receives King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur, to meet the challenge. I refuse to bring any spoilers further. But, I will tell you that along Gawain’s sojourn to the Green Chapel he is only armed with a sword, shield, and sash made by his mother who insists that no harm will come to him as long as he never takes it off. He will encounter thieves, the ghost of a young woman seeking her head, a fox that befriends him, a horde of female giants, a mysterious lord with his blindfolded old woman and the lord’s lady that is the spitting image of Essel, but far more attractive and vivacious, also played by Vikander.

David Lowery has brought on his previous cinematographer from A Ghost Story and he brings to the screen just as much grit and dirt as he does lush richness, comparable to John Boorman’s ’80s classic Excalibur. Although, Lowery’s tale of one man’s search for fame and glory goes beyond jousting, battles and chivalry, his retelling is a modern one filled with sex, blood, magic and much contemplation on what we are put on this earth for.

The story is not a thrilling adventure, but a melodic piece of poetry that some may find rambling and perplexing. A thinking man’s nightmare of a fable. The Green Knight is not for everyone, but it is good soup for the soul of lovers of arthouse cinema.

Jolt — Movie Review

NEED A JOLT?

Movie Review – Jolt

Review by Ray Schillaci

SOME SPOILERS PRECEDED IN BOLD – jump to the next paragraph

Whoa, have we seen this before? The Amazon “original” action movie Jolt starring Kate Beckinsale feels very familiar. Demure female becomes a bad ass, kick butt killer like Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde, Angelina Jolie in Salt, Jessica Chastain in Ava or Sash Luss in Anna.

The problem with Jolt is not just the derivative storyline, but Beckinsale herself who feels miscast as a woman with such intense anger issues that she needs to strap herself with a device that delivers an electric shock to her body whenever her temper flares up. It’s also hinted that she may work for a shadowy part of our government as a weapon of sorts.

The actress has proven before that she is well adept at handling action with the Underworld franchise. But, in those films she’s playing a vampire with super human strength which was acceptable with her small frame. This is not to say that small women cannot kick ass. But, even Milla Jovovich’s character in the Resident Evil franchise is no ordinary human with an arsenal of weapons, which explains her overtaking monsters and zombies. The other women mentioned also were aided by an array of weaponry.

In Jolt, Beckinsale, all 5’ 7” and 132 lbs. dripping wet, has only her IED issues (Intermittent Explosive Disorder) and knowledge of martial arts. By the way, this is an actual disorder. This gives her the ability to take down half a dozen or more men twice or maybe three times her size? If you can get past the flighty fantasy of fragile looking Kate ripping apart the screen with her rage then the movie will be a fun time waster. Don’t get me wrong, I love watching Kate Beckinsale. She is a marvelous actress. I just had a hard time with the believability factor.

In her early years, Lindy (Beckinsale) was institutionalized to help control her rage. But, the physicians at the asylum are unsuccessful. Then a secret organization attempts to weaponize her, but she proves uncontrollable. She is then placed in the military in the hopes to give her structure and discipline. This too proves to be a dismal failure. Eventually, the organization subjects her to experimental treatment and a form of self-applied shock therapy becomes the answer to Lindy’s outbursts with the aid of a Dr. Munchin (Stanley Tucci).

Lindy becomes a bouncer during her off time from the government. She is finding it increasingly hard to control her anger and keeps asking Dr. Munchin to increase her voltage. Munchin not only is her physician, but also plays therapist. He suggests that she start dating to help control her anger issues. Lindy hates the idea, but gives it a try.

Her first date with a nice accountant is far too awkward for her and she tries to ditch him. But, he turns out to be charmingly persistent. They barely know one another and somehow he has Lindy trust him enough to explain her issues. His acceptance and gentleness leads to them spending the night with one another and this makes Lindy feel that the good doctor might have gotten it right ***SPOILER*** until her promising boyfriend ends up dead. This leads to her searching for the culprit and kicking ass left and right.

Director Tanya Wexler delivers freewheeling fun and action. She proved to handle awkwardness and comedy well with her film Buffaloed and directs with an assured hand. I only wish she had better material to work with. She and her cast are saddled with an all too familiar script that nearly telegraphs the ending less than a half hour into the film.

I’ll reiterate, Beckinsale is fun to watch through the action sequences, and her anger is believable. It’s her physical take down of the baddies that just looks too far-fetched. Other than that, Jolt can be mindless fun. Not worth plunking down big bucks at a theater, but worth checking out in your living room on Amazon.

30 Coins — TV Review

TV Review – 30 Coins (Original Title – 30 Monedas)

Article by Ray Schillaci

Very little to recommend this week. A lackluster biopic on the creation of David Bowie’s character, Ziggy Stardust, and the bizarre title Three Pints and a Rabbi involving three strangers that wake up in a pub to find a dead woman missing chunks of flesh. I swear I’m not making that one up. So, I’m stepping out of the comfort zone and doing something I have never done, recommending a series that had me at the edge of my seat and blew my mind with only eight episodes. HBO Max unveils Álex de la Iglesia’s horror/fantasy/mystery/drama, 30 Monedas (translated – 30 Coins). Perhaps the most outrageous story put to screen since Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead franchise, but sans the humor. That means hours of nail-biting intensity.

The title refers to the thirty pieces of silver that Judas was given to betray Jesus. The opening credits portray the insanity and gruesomeness of both the demise of Jesus and Judas that will probably have you decide whether or not you want to put yourself through this ordeal of intense awe and terror that only de la Iglesia and his writing partner Jorge Guerricaechevarría can conjure. Basically, this is Warner Brothers/HBO Max’s apology for the disappointing last Conjuring movie.

This is not the first time I have praised Álex de la Iglesia’s vision. The man is like an insane combination of a hardcore Guillermo del Toro and Ken Russell (Altered States, Tommy) with dizzy nightmarish visuals and an odd sense of dark humor, displayed from the very beginning with his first film, The Day of the Beast, that he collaborated with his writing partner Jorge Guerricaechevarría.

They went on to even more impressive fare with Perdita Durango (Dance With The Devil) starring a young Rosie Perez and Javier Bardem, their first American film, The Oxford Murders with Elijah Wood and John Hurt and the funny and subversive Witching and Bitching, along with an impressive line up of other oddities that are well worth checking out.

But, nothing these two have done can compare to 30 Coins, which had me gasping at times at what I was watching. This tale of of an exiled priest, boxer and ex-convict that flees to a remote village in Spain to escape his demons is a must for fans of horror and suspense. From the opening shot of a cow giving birth, and the entire village rife with rumor as to what was delivered, to demon possession, Ouija boards and cursed mirrors.

What some could easily turn into a pedestrian affair, de la Iglesia and Guerricaechevarría weave a tawdry tale that is both fresh and frightening while littered with great characters. Eduard Fernández is an actor with nearly as many transformations as a young Robert De Niro. Fernández plays Padre Vergara, who at one time was involved in an exorcism that went drastically wrong and left him with an unusual souvenir from the demon that challenged him… a silver coin that may date back to the crucifixion.

As mentioned, he has made the village his home to escape his past. But, that history may be catching up with him with the strange birth of a child, a missing young girl and the reappearance of the same ancient coin to haunt him. People in the village begin to die mysterious deaths and paranormal sightings only get stranger as time goes on. What makes the whole affair more interesting is those that end up helping him. The mayor of the village, Paco, and the town veterinarian, Elena, who helped deliver the mystery child.

Paco is a sensitive soul who tries to have time for everybody, which puts a strain on his marriage, not mention the obvious attraction he has for Elena, but he tries to keep his relationship with her professional. As they continue to delve into the mystery surrounding them, their affinity for one another becomes progressively stronger. That mystery involves the coin which could be one of the 30 coins given to Judas to betray Jesus which may lead to a conspiracy revolving around the Holy See also called the See of Rome involving the Bishop of Rome, the Pope, and Vatican City.

Some may find this show blasphemous and that’s understandable. Others will be captured by its mystery and marvel at its dynamic visuals while in awe of the effects and intrigued with the story and its characters. The whole production has the look of a high budgeted feature film thanks to cinematographer Pablo Rosso, known better in the states for his eerie lensing of the rec franchise and Netflix’s fright flick that some viewers insisted they could not watch all the way through, Verónica. Also, over 70 effects crew members deliver visual scares that consistently catch us by surprise with cliffhanging horrors.

30 Coins is only eight episodes and each one of them bears one surprise after another. Some may take issue with the subtitles, but that should not stop you from viewing one of the most visceral and terrifying experiences in a long time. Álex de la Iglesia and Jorge Guerricaechevarría could very well prove to be the new masters of the macabre. If you’re looking for real frights and don’t have HBO Max, now is the time to subscribe.

Rare Beasts — Movie Review

PIC of the Week – Rare Beasts

Article Series by Ray Schillaci

Brainstorm Media may be a new contender with A24 in bold and risk taking with its release of their disturbing emerging artist/monster film Bloodthirsty and now the quirky black comedy that decimates the rom-com with Rare Beasts. No, this is not a horror film, but it is a very dark, twisted, and funny story about the most dysfunctional people you may ever see on-screen. Billie Piper proves to be a triple threat as writer/director and actor in one of those rare instances of a filmmaker willing to take the risk and leap of faith to bring their demented vision to the screen and deliver the kind of film that we haven’t seen since Carl Reiner’s Where’s Poppa? or Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude.

Some may think that this is mighty high praise. I probably approach that with some caution since those movies mentioned are now considered classics. But, when they first opened those films were panned. People did not understand them. Those filmmakers dared to step outside the norms of comedy and broke so many boundaries to our hearts’ content. Billie Piper does the same with her bold vision of a nihilistic single mom with a disturbed child dipping her toes into the relationship arena only to find the worst possible partner.

Everything about this film feels like it’s going to be uncomfortably wrong and that the people in it are not those you would want to spend any time with. That could be very true and you can thank God they are only on screen and not in your life. But, there is something genuine about these broken characters that rings true and sometimes comedy can be found in the worst of tragedies. It’s a fine line to walk and not everybody will want to traverse it, but those willing to take the risk could find it remarkably refreshing from the dribble drabble of ordinary rom-coms.

Piper plays Mandy, looking for love in all the wrong places, and, of all places, at her place of work. Mandy is not only nihilistic, she is insanely self-conscious which leads her to dating Pete, a member of an online community who considers himself unable to attract women and yet obsessed with marriage and religion. One look at Pete and some women would turn away. Once he opens his mouth most women would make a mad dash to the nearest exit. But, Pete’s obsession with Mandy attracts her to him since she feels no one else would have her with all her baggage – a child with behavioral problems, a mother terminally ill, and a father with a bizarre demeanor. Mandy and Pete’s relationship is a match made in hell with the devil grinning from ear to ear.

Going along with this insane situation is wonderful acerbic dialogue that stings with every jab. This may be exhausting for some, but anybody having met people similar to this can find the dark humor very entertaining while someone on-screen makes you cringe and laugh. I can’t help but feel that Piper has taken something from the depths of her soul and translated it to film for our entertainment with the understanding that everybody needs love, even the loveless.

Everybody on-screen shines while daring to bring out every little loathsome quirk about their character. Leo Bill as Pete is the poster boy for the loser all women should avoid. He is aggravatingly annoying, pathetic, and hits every comical mark. Piper breathes sympathy into a character that most people would rather discard. Her look on life is so depressing and funny to us at the same time. She can’t help herself, especially with everyone she has surrounded herself with. It’s like living in the land of misfit toys just nowhere near adorable.

Piper’s title for the film is very appropriate for it is a rarity among all the other releases of this year and many others. It’s the type of film that would play the midnight circuit and gather a following if given half a chance. Rare Beasts is achingly funny, heartfelt and far from poignant, but that’s what separates it from all the pablum posing as comedy.

Rare Beasts is now playing theatrically and is also available on prime, Roku-VUDU, and AppleTV

5 Ways to Hold Yourself Accountable

So many people in life talk about their hopes and dreams but, unfortunately, many put those ambitions on hold. The main problem is that they procrastinate.

All of us are designed with a purpose and we have been given the talent to achieve our dreams. The key is to take steps to make those dreams become reality. This is why it’s important to find ways to hold ourselves accountable. Accountability will keep us striving towards our goals and will keep us consistent.

Today, I’m going to encourage you to start taking these necessary actions to be accountable to your intentions.

1) Commit to a schedule

Achieving success does not happen by accident. It is important that we put a plan into place and put together a schedule that is going to help us achieve our goals.

It is vital that you set the schedule and make a 100% commitment to it. Your schedule should set specific and time-oriented objectives.

2) Set small goals

It is important to have a big dream but you also want to make sure that you are setting small, daily goals in order to achieve that dream. Hold yourself accountable by making it as easy as possible to take small steps towards achieving your big goal.

Progress and accountability go hand-in-hand. If you see yourself making progress, you’ll be less likely to become overwhelmed feeling that your dream is too big. Achieving small goals helps you to achieve your long-term goals.

3) Celebrate the small wins

On your success journey, take some time to celebrate each success that you have. This is an important part of holding yourself accountable because it helps you to stay focused. Each win helps to build your confidence.

4) Get an accountability partner

It’s important not to be a lone ranger during this process. Make sure you choose the correct accountability partner that will help you. I am talking about someone who is committed to helping you reach your goals and at the same time, you can help them.

Find someone who’s in life where you want to be or where you are going. Make sure your accountability partner is reliable and truly committed.

5) Review your progress.

Take the time to regularly review the goals that you have set for yourself. This is a chance to check on your overall progress. You can see how far you’ve come and, if you’re not where you want to be, this will give you the motivation to level up.

Find the areas where you can improve and make the commitment to keep growing.

Accountability is definitely a big part of your success journey. Anytime you set a goal, it’s important to take the steps necessary to achieve it. Holding yourself accountable means deeply embracing the reasons why you are doing what you are doing. Make that 100% commitment and hold yourself accountable. Believe me, it’s worth it! You can do this!

Have a super fantastic week!

Things You Need to Know Before Flipping a House

The idea of purchasing a home with the intent of flipping it is a pretty tantalizing one. After all, there is a whole genre of television dedicated to the topic. Though many of those television stars can make the work seem easy, it is substantially more challenging. What often gets glossed over in the shows is the dirty work, the unwelcome surprises, and the intensive time commitment.

Though it may not be quite as glamorous as on TV, surely there is a very real, very lucrative motivation for flipping homes? In some situations, there is. Ultimately, reaping a profit is highly dependent upon market variations, the workload associated with the individual home, and smart business choices.

Before deciding to purchase a home with the intent of flipping it, you should think seriously about the potential risks of the investment. Is the hard work and construction something you can manage? Will building materials and appliance upgrades be enough to cover the associated costs?

Is Flipping Right for You?

Interest rates are at a serious low right now, which has encouraged many people to consider buying a second “project” home to flip for a profit or even consider renovating their primary home before putting it on the market. Add on an exceptionally tight market for entry-level homes and the idea of earning some extra cash for a bit of work seems like a great idea. But, there are certainly some questions one has to ask themselves before diving into the world of flipping.

The first, and perhaps most significant question is: do you have the time and the skills to make a profit on an investment like this? Many experienced home flippers will tell you that it really does take a village to make it happen since you likely won’t have all of the skills necessary to do everything. Even with a background in home construction, you’ll likely need a contractor you can trust, a good home inspector, and a real estate agent who can help you get the most out of your investment.

Another thing to keep in mind is that while interest rates are low, building materials are incredibly high right now. That means that any of the renovations you have planned are likely to cost substantially more than they might have before the COVID-19 pandemic. This can seriously hurt your bottom line, especially if you are buying in a tight market where the price to buy a home in the first place is skyrocketing.

Meeting Budget

If you are going to go ahead and flip a home, it is valuable to set a budget and stick to it. Setting a budget is good advice no matter what home projects you are taking on, but it is especially important when flipping because it can be the difference between making a substantial profit and getting stuck in a home that ultimately costs you far more than it is worth. Write down the necessary fixes and the estimated costs for completion. Be realistic about what is both feasible and affordable.

When it comes down to it, deciding to take more time to do something correctly will likely save time and money overall. This means pricing out material costs and comparing them to alternatives. It can also mean shopping around for the right contractor to complete certain work so things will get done the way you want them on time.

The cost and return on investment for a home can vary substantially depending upon the level of work that you do. For instance, minor cosmetic home repairs such as replacing appliances, finishing flooring, or doing some landscaping tend to have somewhere around a 10% return on investment. Moderate repairs such as updating bathroom plumbing or putting in new countertops can reap almost twice the return while extensive home repairs may earn a bit more.

Red Flags

Although many people often think of home flipping as a hobby or a quick way to make money, it is actually more like a business. This means that it requires a business mindset to be successful over the long term. Some of the most common mistakes are underestimating the time or money requirements and overestimating personal skill sets.

There are some major things to look out for when looking at a potential investment property. Simply having a good idea of the amount of time and money some repairs are going to take can save a lot of trouble down the road. For instance, watch out for extensive repair issues such as moisture and leaks or cracks in the foundation — these are things that will eat up the majority of your budget quickly.

Another important thing to watch out for is the location of the home you are intending to invest in. Home flipping is very location-based — the return on investment will be much lower to almost non-existent if the house is located in an undesirable location. Focus on looking for places that are close to downtown or major centers of employment. These areas should also be close to daily needs such as schools and grocery stores.

Deciding to invest in a house with the intention of flipping is a big one. Take the time to set a budget and evaluate the time/workload that will be involved in getting everything done while still making a profit. Expect the unexpected expenses, but think critically about the purchase before making it to avoid some of the reddest flags.

“Lost in the Cosmos” by Walker Percy

The full title of this work of nonfiction (published in 1983) is Lost in the Cosmos: The Last Self-Help Book. The author, Walker Percy, had already written several critically acclaimed novels; one of which, The Moviegoer, won the National Book Award. His fictional work is funny and perceptive but he tends to make his point in roundabout ways. This same observation applies to Lost in the Cosmos. With a nice blend of irony and earnestness, the theme of his book is indicated at the opening:

‘How you can survive in the Cosmos about which you know more and more while knowing less and less about yourself, this despite 10,000 self-help books, 100,000 psychotherapists, and 100 million fundamentalist Christians…’

The book is filled with quizzes, questionnaires, thought-experiments and diagrams.  Sometimes it looks like a textbook; elsewhere it transitions into a parody of the bygone Phil Donahue Show. There is also a science fiction section involving an encounter with extraterrestrial intelligences.

One section of the book deals with the problem of depression. Percy poses a provocative question: ‘Whether the Self is Depressed because there is Something Wrong with it or whether Depression is a Normal Response to a Deranged World’. In other words:  ‘Assume that you are quite right. You are depressed because you have every reason to be depressed.’  He goes on to offer a solution which some readers might consider grossly irresponsible: he suggests that the depressed person seriously contemplate suicide. I make haste to add that Percy does not want any of his readers to commit suicide. His intentions are therapeutic: he wants the depressed person to survive this contemplation of suicide and wake up to the fact that he or she is radically free:

‘Since he has the option of being dead, he has nothing to lose by being alive. It is good to be alive. He goes to work because he doesn’t have to.’

His opinions are not always on target, and some of the material is dated. For example, certain neutral or benign activities (television viewing, travel) are interpreted by him in too negative a light. Also, he speaks of Cold War tensions between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., which might strike younger readers as too obsolete to matter now. But nearly everything in this book is as relevant today as it was in the 1980s, and even his off-the-mark observations are smart enough to merit consideration.

Lost in the Cosmos is a witty parody of self-help books generally, and a brilliant analysis of why humans are so screwed up in so many ways. Moreover, solutions to our problems are usually hinted at rather than spelled out. Some readers might find that disappointing—a psychological or moral tease. But other readers will appreciate the sheer variety of valid possibilities that are presented.

This is the sort of book that a person could hold onto indefinitely, delve into repeatedly, and emerge with an arsenal of life- and sanity-saving insights.
