What Are Your Plans for 2020? Part 5

Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my favorite verses…….I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. What a positive verse this is, especially knowing that there are PLANS made for us.

For the last four weeks, we have focused on the word “prosper”. If you have not had a chance to read through all of these motivations, please go back and read through them and commit to following the full plan. If you have read through them, please re-read. This is a plan that truly works, there is a design for you to prosper financially. All you have to do is make that plan and follow it without looking back.

Today we are going to focus on the word “hope”. Since we are using a scripture verse, I feel it is important to define the word from a biblical perspective.

Many of you know that I speak a lot about success and how to achieve it. It is absolutely imperative for us to have belief in ourselves if we want to attain great levels of success. People who are successful have a great confidence and self-belief. I doubt that you will ever hear them say, “I hope to become successful.” The word “HOPE” from a world’s perspective is commonly used to simply just make a wish.

Now, from a biblical perspective, HOPE is the confident expectation of what God has promised and its strength is in His faithfulness. Hope is something to look forward to. Hope is confidence in the future.

There is no question that in life, we are going to have difficult times. I have learned that we are either in a storm, coming out of our storm, or getting ready to go through a storm. Sometimes we may go through struggles in life that quite honestly seem hopeless. Stay focused, you will get through it.

As you are on your success journey, you will have bad days. You may even feel like throwing in the towel sometimes. People may question you. Some will tell you that you are not going to be successful. You may even have some who will say, “I told you so.” This is why it is very important to always remember why you began your success journey. You will get through the difficult times, don’t look back. Don’t listen to the naysayers. Be committed to the cause. Your future looks bright and nothing is going to stop you. You have an attitude of confidence and great expectation. That’s what we call HOPE.

I’m going to leave you with another verse that has been a great encouragement to me…

But those who HOPE in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not be faint.

Isaiah 40:31

Let me encourage you this week to keep building your self-confidence. Keep your attitude positive always and have great expectations for yourself.  You have an incredible HOPE for all the positive things that are in front of you.

Have a super fantastic week!

Fighting the Coronavirus by Improving Your Indoor Air Quality

The war against the coronavirus continues as governments and medical experts from every corner of the world work tirelessly to contain it. Now, the latest updates on the virus state that it can be transmitted via aerosol or by direct contact or transmission via respiratory droplets.

In China and other parts of Asia, a series of measures have been taken to prevent the spread of the virus including the cancellation of events and social activities. To stay safe and healthy, people are advised to minimize travel and to practice good hygiene. Moreover, homeowners, school officials, and business establishments have also been encouraged to maintain good indoor air quality to reduce the risks of infection.

Here’s how you can fight the coronavirus by improving your indoor air.

Proper Sanitation Is a Must

Maintaining good air quality can be a challenge as everyday pollutants can cause a host of allergies and health conditions, but it’s even more important when dealing with a highly contagious disease. To stop the spread of the coronavirus, mass quarantines have been enforced. One of the most recent and most significant ones to date happened on a cruise ship after dozens of people aboard tested positive for the virus. As the coronavirus can survive on surfaces for up to three days, proper sanitation should be a priority to ensure a healthy indoor environment.

Schools, offices, and shops should consider hiring a professional cleaning service to disinfect their spaces, and cleaning should be done as often as possible to reduce the risks of infection. Offices should also provide employees with protective masks and 70 percent ethyl alcohol so they can disinfect their hands and work spaces as often as needed. Regular HVAC cleaning should also be done to keep clean and fresh air circulating within properties and establishments.

Open Your Windows

Those who may want to keep the virus out may be tempted to keep their windows tightly shut. However, doing this may cause your indoor air to get stale and unhealthy and it can do more harm than good. If the weather allows, open your windows to let the air circulate as the virus cannot survive in a well-ventilated space. You may also want to use an electric fan while your windows are open to improve ventilation.

Use an Air Purifier

In 2003, air purifiers became a necessity in hospitals all over the world as people dealt with the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) breakout. This time, air purifiers can also help to battle the new coronavirus, as it can clean the air without the help of harsh chemicals. Use an air purifier if it’s cold, or during inclement weather, so you can have clean air if opening your windows isn’t a possibility.

The fight against the coronavirus can be won through proper hygiene, maintaining good indoor air quality, and by being mindful and taking extreme care of your health when out in public. Be vigilant, keep your cool, stay safe and healthy, and don’t hesitate to seek medical care if you need it.

What Are Your Plans for 2020? Part 4

This has been an incredible topic; one that’s very near and dear to my heart. You can have the best in life, it’s up to you. All you have to do is make a decision and put a plan into place.

We have been breaking down the verse Jeremiah 29:11. For the last several weeks, we’ve been covering in full detail the phrase, “Plans to prosper.“ It’s exciting to know that there is a plan for our lives as long as we follow it.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve discussed the importance of putting a financial plan together. We began by setting a goal to become more organized, and we also talked about making the decision to become debt-free. Once you are debt-free, you will feel the peace and excitement of having freedom. This is where you can get truly excited about building wealth. Yes, you can have financial abundance and you can have the life that you’ve always dreamed about.

This week, we are going to wrap up this topic on the word “prosper”. There is a phrase that Dave Ramsey uses which has so much validity to it; it goes like this, “Live like no one else, so later you can live and give like no one else.” What does that sentence truly mean? Well, most people unfortunately live above their means. They are way too busy trying to impress people they don’t know and people that maybe they don’t even like. They get into debt by using credit, big car payments, and they purchase homes they cannot afford. When you live like no one else in the beginning, you are making a decision that you are no longer going to live this way. You are committed to becoming debt-free, paying your mortgage off early, and building long-term wealth.

It’s tough in the beginning and a complete behavioral change, but it is definitely worth it. Once you get through this stage, you now can begin to live like no one else. What a great place in life to be! This leads me to my final topic for the word “prosper”

Be a Cheerful Giver

To me, this truly defines what joy and happiness is all about. This is a huge part of your success plan. It’s been my experience that there is no better feeling than the joy of giving.

Many of you have heard me state that we are all blessed to be a blessing. How true that is! The success and the financial rewards are not just about getting things for ourselves. Sure, it’s nice to live a life of abundance but remember—much is given, much is expected. When you have the blessings to be able to give to organizations, churches, families, etc., the rewards that you receive are not only joyful here, but we are also storing up treasures eternally.

You have the opportunity to make an incredible difference in so many people’s lives. This is never about greed or getting too much. This is all about helping and blessing other people. The joy and the rewards are absolutely incredible.

My hope and prayer for each and every one of you is for you to understand that you are designed for greatness; you are designed to prosper. This is all part of the plan you have been gifted. You have been blessed with an incredible opportunity and the rest is up to you. Experience the success and the true joy of being able to GIVE. It is time to truly prosper!

Have a fantastic and prosperous week!

“Wise Blood” by Flannery O’Connor

Brad Dourif, who starred in the 1979 film version of “Wise Blood”, had this to say about the screenplay: “I thought it was the weirdest, strangest, coolest thing that I had ever read”—which could serve as a pretty good blurb for the book as well. I say that because “Wise Blood”, the novel, is actually my favorite work of fiction. However, I recommend it with a measure of reserve because it is definitely not for everyone.

The plot concerns a young man named Hazel Motes. Recently discharged from the army, he ventures into a city in the Deep South where he means to “do some things I never have done before.” His deeper intention is to prove to himself and to the world that he does not believe in Jesus. Soon he begins a new church which he calls the Church without Christ, “Where the blind don’t see and the lame don’t walk and what’s dead stays that way.”

But Hazel is a contradiction. He indulges in sin but derives little enjoyment from it. And when he attempts to corrupt the daughter of a certain rival, he fails to realize that he is the innocent. The girl is trying to corrupt him. The author herself described her protagonist as “a Christian malgré lui” (that is, Christian in-spite-of-himself).

Hazel’s automobile is an important symbol in the story. It is meant to signify his false sense of freedom (“Nobody with a good car needs to be justified”). The car is his dilapidated substitute for the life-giving freedom of the Holy Ghost. Another crucial symbol is a shrunken man that is on display in a museum. This object is presented to Hazel Motes as a “new jesus” [sic], but he is finally constrained to see it for what it is: a grotesque sign of what humankind becomes without God.

Hazel Motes’ rebellion against Christ is extreme; so is his eventual conversion. The penances he inflicts on himself (quicklime and strands of barbed wire are involved) are harsh indeed. Most readers will side with the landlady, Mrs. Flood, who says to Hazel: “There’s no reason for it. People have quit doing it.” To which Hazel responds: “They ain’t quit doing it as long as I’m doing it.” He began his eccentric crusade in the Church without Christ; he ends up immersed in Christ—but without a Church.

Author Evelyn Waugh said of “Wise Blood”: ‘It isn’t the kind of book I like much, but it is good of its kind.’

I have never been able to figure out the “kind” of book Waugh had in mind. The sheer originality of “Wise Blood” is, for me, one of its strongest attractions. It is an amazing grace tale that is simply inimitable—and amazing.

Where Silence Ends and Freedom Begins

This is where SILENCE ends and FREEDOM begins…

When do we start asking the tough questions? Are we just going to stand back and admire the problem, or are we actually going to do something about it?

My name is Sally Richardson.

I’m a survivor of sex trafficking, sexual assault, and severe domestic violence…and a strong leader in the fight against human trafficking.

After a near fatal car accident in Omaha, Neb., back in September 2011 that left me with a traumatic brain injury, and a year later due to all the meds I was on and seeing multiple doctors, I suffered heart failure and spent another 14 days recovering in the hospital. Soon after, I met my trafficker Michael in February of 2013. It was at this time he immediately started to abuse, exploit, and traffic me.

Any time I showed signs of resistance my trafficker became extremely violent – verbally, physically, sexually, and psychologically. In the beginning he would threaten to harm himself. Later, he would nearly take my life and that of my then pregnant 20-year-old and threatened to rape and traffic my underage daughter.

It took me nearly two years of enduring violence and multiple attempts on my life, near death, for the courts in my county to issue me a permanent order of protection.

After my escape in late 2014 and my divorce in late April 2015, I was left with less than nothing—completely broke and broken.

Yet, I could not stay silent.

Later, I filed a civil case for Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress which was dismissed at the circuit court level. On December 27, 2017, the South Dakota Supreme Court decided unanimously on my behalf giving myself and countless other victims the right to take our traffickers, our abusers, back to a lower court for jury trial for a chance at punitive damages and a normal life.

Still today, I am constantly dealing with the aftermath of my arrest in February 2014 and being labeled a prostitute, which keeps me from obtaining basic needs such as housing and employment. Even with an order of protection in place, my trafficker is up to his old tricks along with his attorney, trying to force me through the courts to give up my current physical address…all this only adds to my daily psychological torment.

Through all that I’ve survived. I have discovered on my own that with much discipline, self-healing and therapy, I no longer tell my trafficker’s story. It’s been four years now since my escape and I no longer think my trafficker’s thoughts, I am no longer trapped in my trafficker’s world.

Sadly, one of the most insidious discoveries I’ve made is that of how I was dismissed by law enforcement in Pennington County and even by my then doctor at Regional Family Residency Clinic. Mostly, just how I was used by my trafficker to bring other girls in and JUST HOW DEVIOUS AND DAMAGING HIS BEHAVIOR HAS BEEN to me. He was living in the Rapid City, South Dakota, area and was allowed to run his day business up until his recent passing.

I don’t pretend to have all of the answers, but I do believe in one thing. That is if just one person would’ve believed in me, believed in my capacity, I wouldn’t be here today. I don’t believe I would have been a victim.

This is where you, every single one of you, can make a difference—By simply becoming familiar with the signs of human trafficking, and listening, and empowering potential victims.

As I said, I’m not here pretending to have all of the answers, but I firmly believe in humanity and that humanity IS the casualty in Human Trafficking.

This is where SILENCE ends, and FREEDOM begins…

THANK YOU

Sally Richardson

“Where Silence Ends and Freedom Begins…”

INTERNATIONAL SMOKE IN MGM LAS VEGAS

Michael Mina, the world-famous chef has paired with restauranteur Ayesha Curry for their new International Smoke in the MGM.

Together they have created an entirely new style of cooking with robust flavors, great presentations, and plenty of mixed ideas to pick from.  Starting with barbecue and cooking styles from all over, they feature roasted shellfish with entrees designed to share.

We started with a very clever drink, Lilikoi Mai Tai made with Selvarey rum, goslings, lilikoi, and pineapple served dazzlingly in a Spam Can.

That’s right, the old tried but true Spam with a slice of lime and an umbrella.  Why not try Ayesha’s Fresh Baked Cornbread glazed with Thai red curry butter or Jerk Duck Spring Rolls?

On our table, we had roasted shellfish with a crab & Thai coconut soup shooter and grilled cheese sandwich.  Citrus beets, Falafel, and a Truffle Caesar salad followed and after that, the Tokyo Fried Chicken and Shaking beef came out cooking right at our table.

The place is buzzing and everyone loves the atmosphere.  Next up was Verlasso Salmon and Mediterranean Branzino, a fish for those who have never heard of it, along with a little Pacific Swordfish.  One of the entrees was a hefty portion of Braised Jamaican Oxtail—Curry grew up with this type of cooking.  They also have St. Louis cut pork ribs, which are first grilled and then smoked, with a choice of their signature international sauces: American Barbecue, Vietnamese Chili-Lemongrass, and Korean Sesame-Gochujang.

Our group next tried a trio of the St. Louis cut pork ribs with the oxtail, Korean short ribs, and some lovely Brussels sprouts.

Off the wood-fired grill, a selection of steaks and seafood with wine sauce or yuzu ponzu, and plenty of Shishito peppers or chipotle chimichurri.

There are many great craft cocktail options and 135 rotating beers, with at least 35 in the house at any time.  They serve plenty of locally made Las Vegas beer.

The restaurant is located in The District on Restaurant Row at MGM Grand.  They have a happy hour starting at 4:30 and dinner starts at 5.  702-891-3924.

Mina currently has restaurants in San Francisco, Boston, Miami Beach, and Waikiki along with many others.  Ayesha Curry is a well-known chef, host of the EllenTube series “Vampire with Ayesha Curry”. Be sure to try this great new space, I give it 5 stars.

Guardian ad Litem: Bloody Screams for Advocacy

Dedicated to Judge Mike Andrews

Screams of fear from my mom and brutal glass shattering noise was what woke me in the middle of a cold night. Walking half asleep into the kitchen, walls covered with my mom’s blood, I saw my mother crouched in a corner. Dad hovering over her tiny frame was about to strike again. That is when I launched my little 7-year-old body with all my might in her defense screaming at my dad challenging him to stop. His then ice-cold gaze in my direction seized me with absolute terror. In the end, I went to bed pretty bruised-up that night, but mom was left alone.

On another occasion, I was reading quietly in the back seat of the family car one Sunday afternoon on our weekly family drive. The noise from their constant arguing kept escalating in volume but that did not bother me. It was pretty common for them to get loud. That is until blood suddenly splattered in my face and all over my comic book from a single blow to my mom courtesy of a man who I was supposed to call dad. She was bleeding profusely with a broken nose.

As a volunteer Guardian Ad Litem, I can tell you these two incidents while difficult to relive are a glimpse into some of the things that happen day in and day out in the communities we serve. About five years ago sitting quietly with guests at my house around the fire pit while my three children slept, these memories were triggered again with screams of terror from a nearby neighbor. That is when I decided, following a previous discussion with a dear friend, that I would never sit idle again not doing my part to help. Just like I did for my mom back then.

In Florida, there are more than 19,000 children in out-of-home placements as of Jan. 15, 2020. Such numbers make finding good homes for at-risk children a challenge. That’s part of why we at the Guardian ad Litem Program – who advocate in court for abused, abandoned, and neglected children – need your support.

It’s in every citizen’s interest to step up, and here’s why: There are more than 400,000 American children in foster care. Their average length of stay is 25.3 months, according to the Ackerman Institute for the Family – and they have rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) similar to veterans of war. What’s more, children who age out of foster care without a family are four times likelier to enter the criminal justice system as adults and 17 times likelier to be homeless by the age of 21.

One way to help is volunteering as a Guardian ad Litem. Children with an advocate are twice as likely to be adopted as those without — and they stay in foster care for shorter periods of time.

You can also donate to non-profits that support children in foster care with everything from school supplies to scholarships. We have non-profit partners in each judicial circuit, helping local children served by the Guardian ad Litem Program.

● To learn more about Guardian ad Litem or to volunteer, visit www.GuardianadLitem.org or call 1-866-341-1GAL.

● Explore adoption: A joint effort by the Governor’s Office of Adoption and Child Welfare and the Florida Department of Children and Families at www.adoptflorida.org.

● For adoption support within the state of Florida, contact the Florida Foster and Adoptive Parent Association at www.FloridaFAPA.org.

● The North American Council on Adoptable Children at www.nacac.org offers a free webinar on adoption benefits assistance.

But while not everyone can take in a child – or be a Guardian ad Litem representing one in court – everyone can help reduce the number of underserved and often neglected children without families.

● Thanks to social media, groups all over Florida support foster parents. The statewide Foster Florida is at www.fosterflorida.org, and they post families’ specific needs.

● Make dinner for a foster family, buy them a gift card, or babysit to give caregiver(s) a break.

● Bikers Against Child Abuse, Florida Chapter, at https://florida.bacaworld.org.
Here are some of Guardian ad Litem Program’s Major Accomplishments for Fiscal Year 2018- 2019:

• 38,997 total children represented

• 10,000+ citizens who volunteered as GALs

• 508 pro bono attorneys donated legal services

• GAL’s “Defending Best Interests Project” collected more than 4,600 hours of donated legal services to defend the best interests of children — $1.3 million worth.

• A partnership with the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, “FAWL in Love with GAL,” connects teenage girls with lawyers who mentor them and provide positive role models. Our new “Total Engagement” program establishes a one-stop shop for law firms and attorneys to find pro bono projects to support the children and families we represent.

• The Program has public-private partnerships donating critical resources to the children we represent, including the National Court Appointed Special Advocates Association, Sunshine Health, and the Akerman Law Firm.

• In addition to consistent assistance from county governments, the Program is supported by 20 not-for-profits, one in each judicial circuit. They provide resources from meeting the needs of individual children (e.g., school clothes, MRIs, camps), to funding positions, organizing GAL volunteer recognition events and helping recruit foster parents.
GAL works to improve the quality of representation for children, including:

• Creating a certification program for our Child Advocate Managers in collaboration with the Florida Certification Board to enhance representation with professional credentialing.

• Facilitating Board Certification with The Florida Bar for our attorneys, who represent over 10% of all Florida attorneys who are Board Certified in Juvenile Law.

• Our training curriculum, the “I am for the Child Academy,” is web-based and publicized to everyone in the dependency community at no cost. The Academy has thousands of registered users and offers not only basic dependency training, but webinars on more complex child welfare issues and free CLE trainings for lawyers.

• At the direction of Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis, GAL Executive Director Alan Abramowitz is chairing a subcommittee of the Children and Youth Cabinet aimed at reducing youth suicide, with a focus on mentoring as a key strategy.

• Since volunteers are such a critical part of our advocacy, we also are partnering with Volunteer Florida to reach more people who want to help abused and neglected children.

Mariela Ollsen who like us all is an avid motorcycle enthusiast has been the Circuit Director for the Sixth Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program for three years. Previously, she worked for the program as a Child’s Best Interest Attorney.

*Mariela Ollsen and husband–Photo courtesy of Mariela

Mariela says the issues faced by children and youth are very close to her heart. “These kids are going to be the future, but kids in the child welfare system often lose hope. But I think the consistency and encouragement provided by our volunteers can restore that hope.” As the Circuit Director, Mariela oversees four Guardian ad Litem offices in Pasco and Pinellas counties, with more than 900 certified volunteers. The Sixth Circuit GAL program faces many challenges, with 3,344 children in the dependency system as of November 2019; of these, our volunteers were appointed to represent roughly 1,848 children. We love our volunteers and need more.

That said I must say after ~5 years volunteering as a Guardian, it has not been easy but the rewards of knowing I am helping to make a child and possibly a parent safer by far surpass anything I can think of. I believe the sentiment is true and one we should all stand by and that is simply to leave no child behind. Please consider this my invitation to join me to protect children.

Isaiah 1:17 17 Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

What Are Your Plans for 2020? Part 3

I am very excited about this subject. We are in the third week of this important topic. Please review the previous two to make sure that you are following the plan. That’s what this is all about, having a PLAN. We are almost done with the first month of the year and it sure does go by fast. Many people unfortunately have given up already on their New Year’s resolutions because they did not put a plan together.

As we stated earlier, we are following the scripture from Jeremiah 29:11 and continuing to break down the word “PROSPER”. We previously covered the importance of getting organized and also the freedom of becoming debt-free.

Make a commitment, if you have not already, to become debt-free. After you’ve accomplished this goal, have a celebration and a debt-free party. You now have freedom and it’s time to start building towards wealth. What a great accomplishment this is and you are now ready to move to the next level.

At this point, you should already have an emergency fund put away in the amount of $1000. Keep in mind, this fund is only for emergencies; going out to dinner is not an emergency. Your next step now is to bring this to a higher level. I’m excited to share these next steps on building wealth.

1) Build up your emergency fund

Being with RMS, we have the absolute blessing of building residual income which means we can still have income even without working. This definitely is a true gift for us, however, we never know what life will bring us. Make a commitment to put away 3 to 6 months of what you make and put that into a true emergency fund. This way, if a storm comes your way, you now have the financial resources to get you through it. This is something that you would put into a regular money market account or savings account. You are not concerned about collecting interest. You want to make sure you have these funds available in case an emergency shows up. This is what I call “Peace of mind.“

2) Start putting away 15% of your income towards long-term investments

This is something that I have been doing for a long period of time. I started a SEP (Simplified Employee Pension) plan and built myself up to putting away the max amount that we can according to tax laws.

This is a retirement plan designed for business owners and independent contractors. It is perfect for our business. You actually get to deduct the amount that you’re putting in off your taxes every year. They have recently increased the amount that you can give to $57,000 annually. Can you imagine if you committed to this and did it for over a period of 10 years?

Get together with a fee-based only financial planner that has a good track record and credibility. They can put you on a plan to help you to attain your goals.

It’s time to really get serious about building wealth. With RMS, we have an incredible opportunity to do this and if you really commit, you can become a multimillionaire. It’s all up to you.

3) Make sure your home is a blessing and not a curse

Unfortunately, so many people purchase a home when they really have no business doing so. Their home ends up becoming a curse rather than a blessing. Make sure you do this the right way.

Purchase a home that you know you can afford. Instead of worrying about what the monthly payments are, start thinking about how fast you can pay it off.

Here is my philosophy on this. When buying a home, it’s important that you are debt-free and you have an emergency fund. Your plan is to put 20% down on the home you are purchasing. Get a mortgage for 15 years and make sure it is a fixed rate with no early payoff penalty. With this philosophy, now your new home becomes a blessing. Make sure you put a plan together to get it paid off much sooner. I look forward to you celebrating a paid off mortgage.

Yes, It’s time for you to PROSPER! Be a good steward of the money that you are receiving. It’s incredible the kind of life that you can have if you put the proper plan in place. Put a good financial plan in place and let’s start building wealth. Now is your time!!

Have a super prosperous week!
