Abhita is a 13-year-old African American girl, tall and obese. Intelligent and charming, she lives with her mom and grandmother.

On the surface, everything seems fine, but Abhita’s is being bullied at school by four girls. The only friend she has is a thirteen-year-old European boy. Abhita, scrolling through numerous comments on Facebook, and reading negative things about her, drives to a decision that will change her life.

Santayana’s Curse

In today’s polarized world, our real enemy is not each other but social media moguls, some in the news media, and some politicians, seeking to divide us for their own monetary greed and political aggrandizement.

Although Hannah Arndt and Rosa Luxemburg couldn’t foresee social media, each clearly saw the mendacity of some media, some politicians, and their use of social and political tools, that were being used (and that have always been used) to try to divide and conquer.

Arndt wrote that isolating people, through suspicion of each other, into their own fear driven corners, was the primary methodology for political forces to control large groups. It’s even easier now that social media, through the use of algorithms, can isolate us, by corralling us further and further into echo chambers which feed our fears. The only personal and interpersonal power we have against such, almost unbridled, social and political control over us, is our own abstinence and mutually agreed upon abstinence.

Luxemburg, who had high hopes for Communism, diverged from that road when she saw censorship methods as not living up to the hype and, instead its usage as the primary way to instill isolation and fear among people, with feelings of isolation and loyalty only to the state as their only form of safety.

When the Communists thought Luxemburg’s views would hurt their cause, they had her assassinated and, to cover their tracks the “movement” (be careful of mendacious causes renamed as “movements”) made a martyr out of her, ironically using her own words, (regarding her high hopes for communism), to support the cause which destroyed her.

That irony is poignant. If you study and understand the slippery, social and news media slope we’re on now, with social media’s ability to censor free speech, through Section 230 of the Telecommunications Act, of 1996, you’ll see that Luxemburg would have made a valiant effort to stop it’s voicing only one side. She would have told us (and we should listen) that if censorship of one side is the game, it’s not the end game…totalitarianism is. And, in that game all are silenced except to bend knees in fealty.

Jorge Santayana (1863-1953), a political philosopher, educated in the US and a professor at Harvard, taught that history will repeat for those who don’t take heed. The problem is that those who don’t take heed usually can’t, because they’re too far generationally, from those who have lived that history, to really understand and appreciate its lessons.

Those of us who aren’t too far generationally have an obligation to try to prove Santayana’s historical insights wrong. We can do this by trying our best, with our last breaths if necessary, to reach the newbies, through teaching them history, with all of its warts (not by tearing it down and re writing it).

Only after teaching historically harsh lessons, can we can ask, hope, and pray that those who will take the reins can learn better ways of living. Our failure to teach the ugly parts of history, with lessons of causation and avoidance, is to abandon new generations to Santayana’s curse.

Nostalgia, history, and the best food in all of Las Vegas—Piero’s!!!!!

Every single time you get all three, plus more, wrapped up together when you walk into this 40-year-old establishment. The history of Piero’s is incredible. Probably every mobster that ever came to Vegas, and trust me, they all came, dined here numerous times. Every movie star that stopped in town dined here, and why not? There are multiple rooms all with their own history and photos of yesteryear. 

I have lived here 40 years and I can’t count the times I have loved coming to the place. I wrote an article before that I had dined with numerous Teamsters officials from Chicago, a few local celebrities, and the boxing legend Ken Norton here over the years.

Well, once again my guy and myself along with other media writers were invited for one of our highlights of the year. We started out with wine and drinks at a private table in the back room, very private. The first course out was a huge seafood platter with crab claws, giant shrimp, oysters, and mussels with five different dipping sauces—beautiful spread. A fantastic Romaine salad, for which they are well known—super crisp and delicious, along with a plate of marinated tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella cheese. A lovely plate of crisp calamari and sauce, along with hot and tasty fresh tortellini were next.

I’m telling you the owner, Freddie, and his son Evan Glusman are the premier owners and hosts here since the beginning. They have seen and done it all with their fantastic food.

White penne pasta was next and then giant meatballs. Each one could feed three persons. Halibut, cooked to the exact temperature, could have fed four. Here we dine family style, one giant dish for every four people. A huge piece of veal was next on the agenda, which was absolutely fantastic. Now, Piero’s is also known for the Osso Buco and they didn’t fail us with another large platter and plenty of noodles. At this point we had been there 2:45 minutes.

Everyone that has seen the movie Casino has seen the inside of Piero’s, as that is where all the restaurant scenes were filmed. And then, of course, all the stars dined there night after night.

They are located on Convention Center Drive one block from the Convention Center. Valet Parking. Absolutely do not miss coming here.

Edited by Paul M. Angle and Earl Schenck Miers, The Living Lincoln is a historical work that was first published in 1955 and was reissued by Barnes & Noble, Inc. in 1992. Its contents were gathered from a nine volume edition of Lincoln’s writings. The Living Lincoln itself is a sizable work—over six hundred pages long. Even so, it is not overwhelming because, unlike a dry history, this book breathes with life and unfolds with a tremendous sense of immediacy.

The editors provide the necessary context for the letters, speeches, and other writings that appear in this volume. There are even some samples of Lincoln’s poetry which, I think, are quite good. For example:

                                      My childhood’s home I see again,

                                      And sadden with the view;

                                      And still, as memory crowds my brain,

                                     There’s pleasure in it too.

In this stanza is a slight indication of Lincoln’s skillful use of language, plus his rather melancholic nature. At times he suffered from severe attacks of depression, not just during but long before the Civil War. Perhaps it was the burden of this affliction that helped to refine and strengthen his character. Those bouts of depression may have been the source of his humility and compassion, and they may have prepared him to face the bloody and tragic war that would be fought during his presidency.

Lincoln had the courage to face the fact that a contradiction was growing like a cancer in this country. If a foundational American principle was that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”—then slavery had to go. Moreover, repudiating in advance the arguments of some historians that the Civil War was not about slavery, Lincoln stated:

“Without slavery the [South’s] rebellion could never have existed; without slavery it could not continue.”

Perhaps it can be argued that the above point is overly simplistic. But if there were other sources of conflict between the North and the South, it seems clear to me that slavery was the exacerbating factor; in the absence of which the Civil War would never have happened.

In any case, The Living Lincoln immerses the reader into the most important chapter in American history—and into the life of that history’s greatest leader. Abraham Lincoln embodied the spirit of this country, including its defects and moral blind-spots. For example, some of his opinions were plainly racist, especially if judged by today’s standards. And while I do not pooh-pooh such things, they do not prompt me to damn the memory of Lincoln, a la “cancel culture”; especially when I take into account his struggle against a form of racism that was a thousand times more oppressive and evil. It was a struggle that cost the lives of over 300,000 Union troops and over 200,000 Confederacy troops. 

Lincoln himself was shot, I daresay martyred, on Good Friday, 1865.

Let’s Cancel Cancel Culture Bullying…

This cancel culture crap (and that’s exactly what it is) is making me sick. It’s destroying democracy under our noses. The only cancellation the cancel culture cops need to stop is their own bullying. And if they refuse, it’s up to the rest of us make our voices heard.

If progressives hate Dr. Seuss, Curious George, and Mr. Potato Head and love athletes who hate America, democracy holds that I have no right to interfere with their views. But the opposite also holds true. I don’t need the Progressive Police to tell me how to think.

If progressives don’t like Dr. Seuss or Curious George they don’t have to read those books and if enough people agree, the books will fade away. If they don’t want to play with Mr. Potato Head, because he’s a Mr., they can buy their own generic potato and make it into any gender (or into French fries) but it’s not their right to demand that a well-known, loved toy be taken off of the shelves because of a gender “issue”.

Just as I don’t have the bullish right to tell others what to think for me to “feel safe”, the cancel culture cops don’t have the right to tell me what to read, watch, believe, hire, fire, or have children play with to make them “feel safe”. If we don’t feel safe, it’s up to us to turn off or away from what feels unsafe, not to impose our values on someone who makes us feel unsafe (which rarely works) or upon a manufacturer of whatever the prevailing political pressure deems unsafe.

If conservatives were to demand that progressives adhere to conservative beliefs or be canceled, by being shamed, shunned and fired, conservatives would be cancelled faster than you could say mashed potato. So why should the opposite position be acceptable?

Edmund Burke was the first to say that when good [people] do nothing, evil flourishes. Bullying, for any reason, even disguised as a safety issue, is oppressively evil. Silence to evil is assent. Assent ushers in tyranny.

Once that happens, “there goes the neighborhood” of tolerance that we’ve known as democracy.

“The church is filled with hypocrites, liars, adulterers, cheaters, abusers etc…” I hear that all the time and guess what? It’s true. Another one is, “Oh, I don’t need to go to church or a building to connect with God.” And you would not be wrong.

What amazes me is how we all have become masters at making excuses out of circumstances, or people, out of our control to justify our own behavior. What a crock. You know what? I am the worst sinners of saints and I refuse to stop owning my end of the bargain, showing up where and when I should. As a society we have grown way too much into an enabling and accommodating sensitive bunch. “If it doesn’t feel good then don’t.” Isn’t that how the saying goes? Taking the easy path produces easy and weak men/women. Easy or weak men/women produce hardships. Then hardships will produce strong men/women. Which side of the fence do we want to be counted in? Are we sheep or lions?

Where am I going with this? There is not enough space here to say all I have to say about the church and the judgmental, legalistic, weak hypocrites I have crossed paths with over the last 20+ years. I have been among them wearing the same mask of “holier than thou” and fake purity when in fact I was as they are, saved but rotting in the core of my wicked soul.  

I knew something was wrong, very wrong. Wrong with it all. Until I heard the song, “Oceans”, by Hillsong UNITED (Youtube it!!!) where the song pleads our Maker to take it all so He can teach us how to truly walk a life that is genuine in all our imperfections. This song stopped me in my tracks. I felt it from within, deeper than I ever was accustomed to. I knew at that moment my Maker heard my heart’s prayer and that things were about to change.  Fast forward and I lost it all in 2017. I’ll spare you the details. Let me just say that looking back, I am so thankful. It kicked my ass in a severe way and that is what I needed, still do sometimes to be honest. Today, I am not perfect but I’ve been happier than ever whether I sit among hypocrites or saints. That is, in church or not. Know why? I learned about having compassion even towards those who hurt me. It truly is freeing!

Point is, with all the judgment and hostilities coming at me from the heart of the church, I was resolved to sit my ass in that pew every Sunday even if it killed me, no matter what. I was resolved to never quit going to church, even if the arrows kept coming from those I had come to believe loved me most.

So what? We all face hardships to a degree. There truly are forces out there that seem to want to take us down through depression, adversity, negativity, self-pity, or whatever else. Those forces win when we give up making the right decisions. Getting us to drink or use or whatever, in order to numb our pain is what these forces are after. Getting us to stop hanging out with people or in environments where our crap is going to be called out is exactly their objective. I say hell to the no!

There are hundreds of churches around where we can go and make things right in our soul for our own sake. There are churches of all sorts at least somewhat approachable if you aren’t used to it. If you are a Christian biker (or not), you can reach out to the “Christian Motorcyclist association” https://cmausa.org/. I am certain they will gladly help you find a church you can fit in. Be patient in the process and don’t let it wear you down finding that home church.

One of my favorites is “The Salvation Saloon”, where hundreds of bikers have been gathering now for decades. Former police officer turned Pastor, Paul White, who is a long-time friend and officiant of an event for me shares from scriptures each Sunday. There are a lot of badass saints in that community, you can take my word for it. I’ve heard a few testimonies.

The Salvation Saloon began as an outreach ministry to the biker community and to those who would not seek out God in traditional ways. It began as the “Traveling Saloon Gospel Show”, where they would travel to bars presenting the Gospel message in unique ways. In other words…if people would not go to church, church would get to them… on two wheels.

The demand grew for weekly services instead of just every couple of months. Thus, the “Watering Hole Church”.  Since then, many lives have been changed. Lives that would not have been changed by traditional means. A unique transformation took place. What used to be a biker church is now a church for people of all walks of life. You will find diverse groups of people worshipping God and loving each other in an accepting and non-judgmental atmosphere. They say the “Salvation Saloon” is not just a church…it’s an experience. The church members have come to be known as, “Saloonatics.”

Where do they meet? In a bar. Yes, in a bar. Pastor Paul tells me “Matthew 18:20, Jesus said, that wherever people gather together in His Name…He would be among them. Well, He has not failed to show up at a single service and prove that He is alive and well on planet earth. He’s still changing lives and meeting needs. So, have a drink at the Watering Hole. Jesus said, “if you drink of His water…you’ll never thirst again”. Only He, can truly satisfy the soul. So belly up to our bar.”

Former Hells Angel President Barry Mayson says, “I thank the Lord for this vision and the heart to reach the lost. I was so blessed to preach at the bikers bar church.”

“Call it a miracle, but the watering hole is transformed into something called the Salvation Saloon. On the same bar stool where someone got stoned on Saturday night, someone else gets saved on Sunday morning.” – St. Petersburg Times

Looking back, I’m glad I lost it all. I’m glad I got hurt and went through hardship. And I’m thankful for the sinners and the saints in and outside of church who disappointed me, as I am sure I disappointed them too. It kicked my ass, helped me grow the heck up, own my crap, and not blame everyone else for my flaws.

Friends, be lions! Not sheep. Get your butt in gear and own this gift of life.

Comma to Think of It

I’m very excited to say that I’ve been accepted, as part of the blogging team, for No Strings Attached. I just hope my writing measures up.

That said, as a warning to my readers, when I get excited about a topic (the cousin to that sentence is: any topic I write about excites me), I can, sometimes, get very long-winded and use a lot of commas.

So, to help me remember to be careful, about my writing style, I’m going to keep in mind that…

A man was recently found guilty of overusing commas.

The judge told him to expect a really long sentence.

I’m really looking forward to writing for all who read these blogs, to either provide information, and/or for your humorous enjoyment, as well as to hearing from you if you agree or disagree with what I write, and/or if you think of any topics you’d like me to cover, and/or if you think I should be imprisoned to a longer sentence than this one already is.

Peyote’s in the Heart of Downtown Las Vegas

Had a great Mexican dining experience this week at a newly opened restaurant in the old Downtowner Motel. A couple of restaurants have come and gone in the last couple of years, and we hope this is one to stay. Located just a couple blocks east of the downtown area, plenty of free parking to be had. 

This great place has both an indoor and a fantastic outdoor patio where most of the cooking takes place. Plenty of good seats and barbecue pits. The feel is total Baja Mexico.

The new Executive Chefs Daniel Arias and Isidro Marquez-Castillo, as well as the entire staff, would love to welcome you.
