The NASCAR Chicago Street Race Weekend took place on July 1-2, 2023, and I, Lacey “G Souldier” Turner, had the incredible opportunity to travel from St. Louis, Missouri, to Chicago to cover this monumental NASCAR event as a member of the media. It was an event that will be etched in the history books as the sights, sounds, and speed of NASCAR descended upon the streets of downtown Chicago for the first time.

Already renowned for its sports legacy, Chicago added another thrilling chapter to its illustrious history as the NASCAR Cup Series street race debuted against the stunning backdrop of Lake Michigan and Grant Park. Lacey ‘G Souldier’ Turner is going live!

This event went beyond just racing; it offered a multifaceted experience with music and entertainment options catering to all ages, solidifying its status as one of the year’s signature sporting and entertainment events. As a media member, I had the privilege of getting up close and personal with the action.

I positioned myself on the sidelines, capturing every moment on film as the race cars zoomed past me at incredible speeds. The deafening roar of the engines reverberated through my entire being, heightening the intensity of the experience. A breathtaking display of power and skill left me in awe.

The weekend we featured two highly anticipated races. Unfortunately, inclement weather overshadowed the NASCAR Xfinity Series Chicago Street Race. Drenching rain and standing water on the Chicago Street Course forced NASCAR to declare Cole Custer, the winner of The Loop 121 NASCAR Xfinity Series race, three laps short of halfway and five laps short of the completion of Stage 2.

The race was a testament to the drivers’ talent and determination despite the weather interruptions. The rain eventually subsided on Sunday, and the NASCAR Cup Series Chicago Street Race went full throttle.

Shane Van Gisbergen emerged victorious, etching his name in the record books as the first driver in 60 years to win the Cup Series in his debut. It was an extraordinary achievement that added to the excitement and drama of the weekend. Overall, the NASCAR Chicago Street Race Weekend was a resounding success, attracting thousands of people to revel in the festivities. It was a thrilling blend of speed, skill, and entertainment that left a lasting impression on both the fans and the city of Chicago.

As a media member, I was privileged to witness history in the making and share the exhilarating experience with the world.
