Many people view Memorial Day weekend as an opportunity for a long, fun-filled holiday. It is true that it’s a long weekend which we all love to enjoy. However, with all of the Memorial Day barbecues and plans, it can be easy to get caught up in all of the excitement of the different festivities and forget what Memorial Day is actually about.
Memorial Day is a day to remember and honor all of the military personnel who have died in the service of our great country. Now keep in mind, we certainly want to celebrate Memorial Day but let’s remember those who gave everything to protect our country.
I truly love the United States of America and I’m thankful to live here. I’m thankful for the freedom, and I’m thankful for the great opportunities that this country affords us. I am exceptionally grateful for those who have fought for this nation and especially for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for our freedom. It is because of their sacrifice that we are able to enjoy all the freedoms that we have today.
One of my favorite songs is by Billy Ray Cyrus. It’s powerful and moving and defines what Memorial Day should be about. Here are the words of the chorus:
“All gave some and some gave all. Some came through for the red white and blue and some had to fall. If you ever think of me, think of all your liberties and recall… Some gave all. Some gave all.”
Let this Memorial Day serve as a reminder to keep those who gave everything to protect our country at the forefront of our minds during our weekend celebrations. Take a few moments with your family and truly reflect and be grateful for all the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Have a moment of silence, some prayer time, and time of gratitude. Reach out to someone who has lost a family member, let them know you are thinking of them and praying for them.
Remember, freedom is not free. We thank all of our military personnel and their families, both past and present. We keep those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in our hearts forever, these are the true heroes.
